Last December, the Empire State Trail — a sprawling, 750-mile cyclist and pedestrian route that connects Buffalo to Albany and New York City to the Canadian border, forming what looks like a sideways T — opened to the public. Considering the pandemic bike boom, the timing was perfect.

About 400 miles of greenways, repurposed rail lines and bike paths already existed in New York. So, when the $200 million project was announced in 2017, the state rushed to fill in the gaps between them.

Central Park west drive partial closure

Submitted by MFulton on Mon, 11/01/2021 - 11:02am

Is it me or is a more substantial portion of the west drive shut down this year for the race prep?

Wasn't sure if I had just gotten older and crankier.

Central Park Cyclists Beware! Guidance on Unleashed Dogs in Central Park

(This topic has been covered previously on this forum, but not for a while.  It came up on a recent Strava posting by Rick Snyder, so I thought I would amplify and restate here).

New York is the only state in the country to follow an archaic two-hundred year old rule holding that there is no cause of action for negligence when a pet animal causes bodily injury, unless it can be shown that the pet owner was on notice of the animal's "vicious propensity" beforehand.  In practice, this has meant that the owners of unleashed dogs who cause Central Park cyclists doing laps to fall and be injured have no responsibility to pay for medical bills or other compensation to the cyclist.
