Pedal & Paddle Outings this Year?

Submitted by nymultisport on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 4:20pm

Marilyn and I plan to reprise last Summer's all-class Pedal & Paddle outings several times in 2013.

To help us gauge interest in scheduling such outings, please send your comments, questions, and/or interest to Marilyn or Ken, either here, or through our messaging system.

We anticipate the first outing in early-mid June, at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, NJ. Ferry across the Hudson from the midtown terminal, pedal about a dozen miles, paddle for 2-3 hours, have lunch, then pedal and ferry back to NYC via a different route. We're on the Hackensack River, not on "open" water like last year's L.I Sound outing. Kayak rental--some tandems may be available--should only be about $35/pp (courtesy of Hackensack Riverkeeper) for ~3 hours.

The breathtaking wisdom of Ed Orcutt, A Washington State legislator (and one assumes no relation to Jon Orcutt of the Tri-State Transportation Committee):

[You claim it] is environmentally friendly to ride a bike. But if I am not mistaken, a cyclist has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider.  Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.

Direction for making GPS cue sheet for Garmin (with turn warnings)

Submitted by cjpeck on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 11:42am

Hey everybody,

I had a few people ask me how to make a course for Garmins that includes a cue sheet with turn warnings. In other words, you can create a TCX file such that you Garmin will give you a pop warning before you approach the turn itself e.g. it will say 'Right on #9W' 300 ft before the turn and then 'Right on 9W' before the turn itself.  It's a nice feature for giving you a few extra seconds to get the paceline going in the correct direction.

Cycling as emotional and psychical therapy: as important as it is sad

Submitted by RRosenthal on Mon, 03/04/2013 - 1:09am

"60 Minutes" ran a sad, sad piece Sunday about Clay Hunt, a Marine veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan whose emotional injury from being in war resulted in his death by suicide. The piece shows a large ride of veterans from San Francisco to Los Angeles, one of a number of such rides in which the participants find some healing from their emotional wounds.  http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50142087n   9:55 - 11:43. The organizer of the ride, a former pro rider, speaks again at 14:45 - 15:23.

Linda Wintner will be leading Tues and Thurs morning rides in Central Park

Submitted by GRoss on Sun, 03/03/2013 - 11:53pm

I posted rides for Tuesday and Thursday mornings in Central Park -- B16 starting at 6:00 AM. As most of you know, I was just continuing Linda's series through the winter months to the extent we could.

Linda will be resuming her rightful position as leader of the Tuesday - Thursday rides and when her posting gets onto the ride lists, I will remove mine. In the meantime, for those of you who signed up under my name, the ride is still on and I will be there, but Linda will be leading.

Chamois Butt'r in Bike Shops

Submitted by johnvic on Sun, 03/03/2013 - 2:07pm

I've walked into a few bike stores in NYC looking for Chamois Butt'r and they did not sell it.

Does anyone know a store in Manhattan or Queens that sells chamois creme? Midtown is preferable but I just want to buy some.

NYCC March 12th meeting's program and sponsor

Submitted by EWeiss on Sun, 03/03/2013 - 10:38am

Calling all SIGGIES/STS/Audax registrants, veteran cyclists and triathletes (that about covers all of you). Mikael Hanson, professional cycling and multi-sport coach, will be this month's featured presenter at our March 12th meeting. He will be making a presentation entitled: "Are you really maximizing your training time on the bike for improved performance? ". Since this is essentially the unofficial beginning of the cycling season, it is the opportune time to take a close look at whether you are training efficiently and productively to improve your performance, or just "ridiing around" (which is fine, if that is all you want out of your cycling).
