Smithtown to Greenport routing advice

Submitted by MHiller on Fri, 05/10/2013 - 8:48pm

Hey all,

Anyone with local knowledge care to comment on the differences between this route:

and this one:

http://goo.gl/maps/klDL5

between Smithtown, NY and Greenport? The latter hews very closely to NYS bicycle route 25, the former sticks with Sound Avenue and Suffolk County 48 instead. IME, Sound Avenue/48 is less trafficky, but contrariwise there're more towns and services along route 25. Enough wineries on either if we want to choose one to stop at.

Looking for a Ride to the Berks on Friday, May 24

Submitted by RKastrinsky on Fri, 05/10/2013 - 2:20pm

Hi All,

I'm looking for a ride to the Berkshires on Friday, May 24th- only looking for a 1 way trip.  Unfortunately I have to work that day and probably can't leave until 4 or 5pm in the afternoon at the earliest.  My bike and bag already have transportation up to the Berks so this is simply a request to transport myself from Manhattan to the Berkshires on Friday evening.

Please let me know if you have any space available.

You can contact me at: [email protected]

Thanks,

  Rachel

Ever "loose" two miles?

Submitted by velofellow on Fri, 05/10/2013 - 12:06pm

Do any of you occasionally “loose” two miles while riding along 9W?  Sometimes, when I got out for a 50 mile ride, my CatEye wireless computer will show 48.  Other times I’ll go out for a 60 and it will show 58.  This occurs on known routes which routinely come up as 50 and 60 milers.  I don’t expect the distance shown on screen to be exactly equal and consistent for every ride of 50 or 60 miles, but an occasional two mile difference seems odd to me.  I don’t recall this happening on shorter rides, so I think whatever may be causing the interference is located north of Nyack.  Any ideas?
