Elections: A Plea from the Club Secretary.

Submitted by PStorey on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 9:12am
At the bottom of this year’s ballot, you will find a second question concerning the By-Laws. Over the years our voting and quorum procedures have drifted away from the requirements of New York's Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. The Board would like to see the By-Laws brought back into line with the statute. Passage requires a two-thirds vote, and I would ask you to vote FOR the changes.

Currently we have to obey the By-Laws and the statute, simultaneously, in calculating quorums and conducting votes, both at the Board and membership level. Doing so is not a huge problem (fortunately, both currently agree that a quorum of members is 100), although it is confusing.

Thursday Oct 29 Morning Laps in Central Park is CANCELLED

Submitted by GRoss on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 7:15am

It will be raining and the Marathon preparations will get in the way even if it doesn't rain. See you all on November 3 and Tuesday and Thursday mornings after then. My intention is to keep the rides going through the winter if the weather is decent.

Presidential Term Limit Waiver

Submitted by PStorey on Tue, 10/27/2015 - 11:43pm
As most of you know, the Club’s By-Laws currently contain a three-year term limit applicable only to the president. The Board has proposed an amendment to the By-Laws that would allow the Board by a two thirds majority of the whole Board to waive the term limit if it felt it was in the interest of the Club to do so. The purpose of this provision, I want to stress, is not to eliminate the term limit, but rather to allow it to be set aside when it would cause the Club to shoot itself in the foot.

Now, there are arguments to be made in favor of term limits; there are arguments to be made against them.

Campaign message #3 of 4

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Tue, 10/27/2015 - 6:12pm

I believe with all my heart the NYCC is a social recreational cycling club and you joined the Club to make friends and have fun on your bike.

If elected President, my energy, actions, decision making, leadership, will all be based on that premise.

My vision sees the NYCC as the most welcoming, warm and generously spirited social recreational cycling club it can be.   I am running for President because I feel that spirit has been diminished.

You have a clear choice for President this year

The two candidates could not be more different.

Suggestion for late Withdrawals

Submitted by iforst on Tue, 10/27/2015 - 4:25pm

Hey folks,

Since we're having a hard time coming up with reasonable suggestions to help address the late withdrawal issues, here's one to try on for size.

How about if we made it easier for people to withdraw from rides? Currently, we have a process that emails members 48 hours prior to a ride asking them to withdraw if they're not planning on attending. How about if members could just reply to that email with the word WITHDRAW  and have the system remove them from the ride.  Perhaps if we could remove some of the friction (need to open a browser, login to NYCC, find the ride, hit the withdraw button) we'd see some change in behavior.

Bike illiteracy: today's first two-wheeled laugh. Or groan.

I'm listed in a bike industry directory that is published by an organization exceedingly well informed about bike matters. My listing has been under the name Rosenthal Advertising. I added a new listing: Maglia Rosenthal, the name I use on my jerseys.

"Maglia" is the Italian word for "jersey," as in maglia rosa, the pink jersey awarded the winner of the Giro d'Italia. (Cf. mailliot jaune, French for the yellow jersey awarded the winner of the Tour de France.)

I just got a note back from the directory publisher confirming the name: MAGNOLIA Rosenthal!

And can this info be added to the "Vote" page?

No SIG experience--what can I or can't I do?

Submitted by Hendon on Mon, 10/26/2015 - 4:40pm

I'm a fairly new member of the club who has done 5 or 6 rides with the club, including yesterday's open social ride.  I feel comfortable riding with a group and, to the extent it translates, I have a ton of experience leading and otherwise particpating in motorcycle/scooter rides around the tri-state area.  But I haven't done any of the SIGs.  Is there a limit to the kinds of rides I could reasonable sign up for?  I see rides I might be interested in, but I don't have any formal experience with bicycle pacelines and the like, so I don't know what the club protocol is.  I wouln't want to mess things up for the more experienced riders.

Verona in December?

Submitted by EJacobs on Mon, 10/26/2015 - 12:51pm

I'm headed to Verona the first week of December, flying in to Milan. I'd also like to visit the Pegoretti workshop in Trento.

Any advice about road biking in the area? Specifically, where to rent a decent bike, routes, and road conditions? Can bikes go on trains?

I'd like to get out and ride, weather permitting.

Non-biking advice about the area (restaurants, places to see, etc) gratefully accepted, too.

Thanks,

-Erica
