possible phishing email using the name "VeloSurance"

Submitted by JRubin on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 10:29am

I received an email that begins "Thank you for purchasing a VeloSurance policy." I don't remember doing that.

The email goes on to request that I visit a website hosted at velosurance-dev DOT firmgrid DOT com. I never will.

Late-Posting For Sunday: B16 in Orange County, NY

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 7:20pm

Just got this listing up after having a difficult schedule all week... would be really nice to see some people on this ride! Beautiful riding territory upstate (but it's all paved, I swear! Well, maybe some hardpack patches. Nothing too funky.)

Nyack Road Closure

Submitted by CWaaser on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 6:42pm

If you're planning to ride to Nyack during the week, read this notice re: Tappan Zee Bridge construction:

"This coming week, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) will install steel girders near the South Nyack shoreline, beginning the process of connecting the new bridge’s Rockland abutment to the already-installed support structures in the Hudson River. Safely accomplishing the work will require reducing River Road to one lane during weekdays between 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flag persons will keep traffic moving by alternating the directional flow between north and south. TZC also will hold traffic on River Road once daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for up to 20 minutes every weekday next week to enable the safe movement of girders and other materials."

New wheels for my spare bike

Submitted by JFinder on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 3:00pm

I recently bought a spare bike to keep me going while my regular bike was being repaired. I've upgraded the bike with new cassette, new saddle and other things. Actually, for a spare bike, I'm liking it a lot.

Now I've had three spokes break and I believe that means I could use new wheels. The bike is a very nice 2014 Giant Defy Aluxx aluminum bike worth maybe $500-550. I don't want to overspend on the new wheels.

So what are some wheel models or types I should be looking at? The wheels should be reliable, accommodate 25mm tires, run fast enough for a B rider on an aluminum bike, be lightweight or at least average weight, and match my bike in terms of quality and price. Thanks.

Van Cortland Park trail condition?

Submitted by April on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 12:18pm

The last time I rode the trail going through Van Cortland park (connecting to South County trailway), there was a section that's pretty narrow, and the overgrown vegetation "reach out" to grab my clothing!

That was quite a few years ago though. Has the trail condition been improved since? Or gotten even worse?

SIG Registration and Participation

Submitted by [email protected] on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 11:59am

Hello everyone,

I recently found out about NYCC and kinda interested at the SIGs that are being offered.  However, I couldn't find any information on the registration etc.  Would someone point me into the right direction here?

Greatly appreciate your help.

Spoke Head Art

Submitted by NWeissman on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 10:44am

While writing up a description for a 20" rear wheel, I was endeavored to determine the brand of spoke.  I knew Wheelsmith, DT Smith and Sapim.  But this one had a lowercase "n" (or possibly a "u".)   So I performed a Google search on "bike spokes with 'n' logo" and came up this remarkable Spoke Head Identification Chart which had photographed and catalogued scores of images and manufacturers.  Who knew?
