Cycling in South Africa this winter

Submitted by LGoree on Sun, 11/22/2015 - 10:21pm

If any of you are considering doing some cycling this winter (their summer) in South Africa and need information, feel free to contact me. I've been in and out of Joburg, Cape Town (Hout Bay) and Durban for three or four rides/races per year there for the last ten years and know the options well. With the very favorable exchange rate, South Africa has never been cheaper and the cycling community there is booming!

Sun 11/22 1:30pm -- bike ride/TA action: Flock on Fifth

Submitted by CWood on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 7:07pm

Any other NYCCers interested in raising awareness for the need for a 5th/6th Ave protected bike lane?

Join TA's Flock on Fifth on Sunday afternoon 11/22.

Start: Collect at 59th Street at Fifth Ave. at 1:30pm.

Ride begins to move at 2pm.

The premise is a Turkey Ride -- with Pilgrims (slowly) chasing a Turkey down Fifth Ave. in holiday mode. The Turkey will be reprieved at Wash Sq Park by a NYC official, then we all go out to church, I mean for a beer.

I'll be there in a red jersey -- that's about as much decoration as I can handle. But most important is to just show up!

P.S. It's going to be really windy tomorrow. So why not opt for a short city ride instead?

LOTS OF RIDES THIS SATURDAY!!!

Submitted by JFinder on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 9:35pm

We have some long waiting lists this weekend. However, some new B15 - B17 rides have been posted. So, if you're on a waiting list, please look at the new rides and consider joining one of them. Keep yourself on the other waiting list if you like, BUT BE CAREFUL NOT TO END UP ENROLLED IN TWO RIDES.

And if you haven't signed up for any ride yet, what's your problem? Get out there.

Roller recs anyone what brands to avoid.

Submitted by Sir Roger on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 11:01am

OK decided I hate the trainer so am going back to rollers. I had some cheapo Nashbar ones that were not that great so looking for something better but not willing to believe that I have to buy Kreitlers.

I have read a few reviews of the performance bike Travel Trac ones. Anyone have any experience with those. Any brands particularly crap or good ??

Anyone got a set getting dusty ??

Monday 11/16 - Marilyn's Birthday Ride

Submitted by nymultisport on Sun, 11/15/2015 - 5:01pm

Our usual shmoozy C-ish pace ride along the Bronx waterfront, with it's amazing variety of parks. 40-45 miles with an equal number of turns.  Meetup 8:45am at Cafe Amrita, 110th & CPW; departure promptly at 9:00am. Outdoor lunch at Split Rock Country Club after a carry of one mile from a deli. Home well before dark, but flashers are always a good idea. Several subway bails available on the return.

musings on the value of a helmet, etc

10 days ago Janet and I had been to West Nyack and now had less than a mile to the bridge.  The last thing I expected would disrupt our ride down Hudson Terrace was the violent impact of an SUV from behind.  I have no recollection of flying through the air but I must have, landing in the grass, separated from my bike, not sure I could move and aware of the initial point of impact….my throbbing lower back.  Janet was far enough in front of me on the shoulder that I had the thought she might not know. That is until she appeared above me and collapsed nearly on top of me.
