Sunday Hike (12/17) Sterling Forest Fire Tower

Submitted by nymultisport on Fri, 12/15/2017 - 3:24pm
A moderate 4.3 mile outing, mostly on woods roads to a hilltop lookout atop the Sterling Forest Fire Tower. We're using cars, so advanced email sign-ins are needed to match available seats with available bottoms. We're expecting 1-2" of snow on the ground, so layered clothing, boots, water, snacks, lunch, and appropriate footgear (perhaps Stabilicers Maxx or IceTrekker Diamond Grips) are recommended... consider a pole too, if desired. Two lunch spots; outdoors at tower base as well as indoor/outdoor facilities at Ranger Station/Park Headquarters.

Paul Hofherr awarded a Lifetime Membership award

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Thu, 12/14/2017 - 11:59am

The New York Cycle Club was founded in 1936, some 80+ years ago.  I’ve often wondered how many people have been members of the Club during that time.  10,000?  25,000?  60,000?  More?

Of all those members, less than 25 have been honored with a Lifetime Membership Award.  Syd Lange, for instance, he founded the Club in 1936, he received one.   So did Chris Mailing.  Chris wrote the Club bylaws that continue to govern us today.  Irv Weissman - many credit Irv with inventing the concept of “spinning”.

Take a look at the carousel on the main page of the Club website; Paul Hofherr was awarded a Lifetime Membership at our Holiday Party.

Another dirty cyclist ...

Submitted by FIVES5 on Wed, 12/13/2017 - 10:36pm

Early news reports are saying the worlds current #1 cyclist, Chris Froome, has tested positive for an increased amount or an unauthorized amount of his own asthma medication. As a result he has already been stripped of his 2017 Vuelta a España titile. Not a huge fan of Froomie, but tons of respect for what he's accomplished in cycling. Here's hoping this is a big mistake and not another black eye on the already suspect sport of cycling.

Several Board members are moving on. . . . .

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Wed, 12/13/2017 - 1:49pm

Several board members are leaving the board as of 12/31/2017.

We will miss them;

·         Jim Finder – ‘B’ Rides Coordinator.  Jim’s been on the board for 3 years.  I never counted, but I’d bet we had more ‘B’ rides than all other rides combined.  Was that Jim’s doing?  I‘d bet yes on that as well.  The guy can’t help himself, he’s already volunteered to organize 2018’s NYCC weekend in the Berkshires.

          Thank you, Jim

Looking to replace factory default tires

Submitted by mhsimkin on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 8:38pm

I'm looking to replace the factory default tires on my bikes. I welcome suggestions as to what I should get.

One bike has Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite, 700x25c.  The other bike has Michelin Dynamic Sport, 700x28c.

I'm not a racer.  If I ride 1,000 miles between both bikes in a year, I would be happy. I ride for exercise and enjoyment. therefore I'm willing to trade weight/speed/rolling resistance for durability/handling.

I'm hoping to me more active next year.

Thanks
