How BIG are the SIGS?
I recently got an e-mail from a new member. In the e-mail, he wanted me to know he just signed up for the SIG this spring (we had met at the February club meeting). He also asked how big the SIGs are.
So I did a little homework; as of this morning, over 450 members have signed up for the SIGs. Add in the leaders riding with them, and we will be putting over 550 NYCC members out on the road on SIG rides. And although the B-SIG has closed registration due to reaching their capacity, we can still fit a few more in the Classic and A-19. It's possible to get very close to 600.
Yup, you read that right... 550+ members.
There are cycle clubs across the country that would kill to have 550 members... forget about having that number out on the road on a weekly basis.
CP this morning - extreme gusts, no Police
Went for a quick ride this morning in CP at 6:30 am.
extremely gusty, Be very careful.
It was worse on the streets as the wind whipped around the buildings - almost got blown over several times in a 15 block stretch.
On the plus side, so no police in CP this morning.
Wake Up and Smell the SIG CANCELED
Hi All,
Unfortunately, mother nature is conspiring against us once again. There are sustained winds near 30mph with gust in the 50s. This is too much for safe group riding. Hope it blows over quickly. Be safe if your going out there today.
Have a good one,
Joel

Wet and Dirty Ride--But Warm
Taking note of the nice weather on Friday, and the encouragement on the message board, I ventured out for my first ride of the year to Piermont. I could not wait to ride my new bike and try out my new shoes, so off I went. It was warm and sunny in the afternoon, I'll give you that. However, the route to the GWB via the Greenway and the shoulders on 9W still have large p[iles of melting snow. It does not really block the path but the snow releases a steady stream of wetness containing salt, chemicals, dirt, oil and who knows what else. It was a nice day, but I returned covered with whatever the passing cars and my bike sprayed up at me. I immediately set my clothes soaking in the sink. The water turned black and oily. While this brew was steeping in the sink.
Are CP Police Pulling Back?
I noticed three riders over a period of about 15 seconds run a red light in CP today--while the park was car-free, directly in front of a police vehicle. The officer did nothing. I had no interest in testing him and waited--but it wouldn't have made any difference in this case. Then, later, I found myself in ear-shot of a cyclist passing a policeman on the paved pedestrian path in the middle of the part north of the Great Oval. When he saw the policeman he immediately jumped off his bike and said: "sorry, I didn't see you!" The policeman said: "no problem, keep going. If I wanted to ticket you I already would have!" They exchanged pleasantries and off the cyclist went!
Putnam Trail in Van Cortlandt Park
Westchester's and Putnam County's beautifully improved South and North County Trailways and Putnam Trail are what remain of the "Old Put", New York City's first rail link to Boston by way of a connection in Brewster. The railroad right-of-way continues south from the NYC-Westchester border through Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation proposes to improve the 48-foot wide Van Cortlandt Park right-of-way, but DPR's "improvement" offers an unacceptable contrast to what we enjoy north of the city.
CP what to look for?
I really do need to go back to CP. Care to share your experiences in detail? How did you get stopped by NYPD in CP? Car/trycicle coming from behind you? Patrol on foot middle of the road? One cop watching you passing the light and radioed another 100 feet later? Where you sprinting? What did you have as ID. For what I've read so far many were stopped at Boat House.... where, if safe, people usually sprint before attacking the hill. y the time you notice a cop on foot trying to get your attention you you probably are 100 yards away? There are about 38 lights in the 6 mile loop......
Last Minute Gimbels SATURDAY, AS IN TOMORROW
I just posted this ride, so not sure if it'll be approved in time for tomorrow. But this is what I said:
Saturday, Feb 19
A23+ 60-80 miles
meet: corner of 125th and Madison
My first Gimbels since before the Great Boxing Day Blizzard of 2010. Be there or be square. No maps, no cue sheets...no problem. Just have a good sense of adventure and a good sense of direction.
