I applaud the new jersey design but don't the world champion stripes violate Rule 16?

Bicycle Tour of Colorado

Submitted by Henry on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 9:21am

If you like altitude than you'll enjoy this! http://www.bicycletourcolorado.com/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=displ...

I rode this in 1999...it was the monsoon season and needless to say it monsooned,
This ride is a month earlier and should be during the dry season. No monsoon.

Believe ride tops off at 12,000+ feet. I enjoyed the ride so much that I stayed away for 11 years. (it was the rain...ugh) But I'm back.

It's a great ride...and the roads are limited access, lots of support and you'll go places and see things that are gorgeous.

This one's about the altitude.

NYCC position on Bike Lanes

Submitted by RKaufman on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 3:24pm

Does the club have an official position on bike lanes? I know some club members — particularly those who feel that riding fast is, somehow, a noble and superior kind of biking that one should aspire to — oppose them. Some would even like to see existing lanes removed. Speaking for the many tens of thousands of people who appreciate our growing network of bike lanes, this would be a bad idea. What's more, it would give back some hard fought victories for NYC cyclists that, frankly, took many decades to achieve.

Ticketed? Report it to T.A.

Submitted by CWood on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 2:10pm

Transportation Alternatives is tracking tickets given to bicyclists. The more they can report, the louder they can complain.

http://transalt.org/campaigns/bike/ticket

From a statement on their site:

"Police enforcement of the most dangerous behaviors on the loop drive is important," said Caroline Samponaro, director of bicycle advocacy. "However, reports to Transportation Alternatives in recent weeks all sound like the NYPD is undertaking a ticket blitz, targeting bicyclists only, rather than targeting the most reckless behaviors that endanger walkers and fellow riders. This lack of discretion undermines the type of enforcement needed to make our streets safer."

hill repeats and 102 cutover

Submitted by crosscountrymule on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 12:40pm

please join me for hill repeats on tuesday morning. too bad it won't be as warm tomorrow morning as it was this morning. nonetheless, i need to get out and train for the sig!

7am boathouse. we'll take it easy getting to the hill.

hopefully the cops won't be out there ticketing. there are 2 lights in the harlem hill loop.

and, does anyone know if the 102 cutover is one-way or 2-way? if it's one way and not west to east, we can get off our bikes, run with the bikes like a triathlon transition, and get back on our bikes on the east side.

gd unjustified tickets.

Red Lights and The NYCC

Submitted by RWolf on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 11:33am

The NYCC will need to make some adjustments to reflect the NYPD's policy of ticketing cyclists who run red lights. Here are some suggestions:

1. How about this scene for a new jersey design: a bunch of cyclists stand over their bikes waiting for a red light to change to green as runners, walkers and rollerbladers pass and proceed through the red light. On the side of the road, a cop ignores muggings and other crimes as he concentrates on the cyclists and of course polishes off a donut.

2. With the slower speeds, the letter codes and numbers for the SIGs will need to change, how about the P Classic, the Q7, R6 and S5?

3. The time cutoffs for the various SIG groups will need to change. A time of about 4 hours for 4 laps will be required for the fastest SIG.

Report from Central Park

Submitted by RWechsler on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 10:58am

Rode between 7-8am today. Didn't get ticketed. Didn't see anyone ticketed.

Very few cyclists despte 47 degree temps. Are folks staying out of the park for fear of a ticket? (Yes....)

Are the police laying off during these early morning hours? Or was I lucky today?

Granfundo from/back to NYC?

Submitted by PLucido on Sun, 02/13/2011 - 6:35pm

I need to think about something other than my excuses for not riding outside (snow, $270 tickets) and find some incentive. So, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

http://www.granfondony.com/

For starters, I can't tell where it starts. It says Manhattan, Central Park maybe?. Think they will stop for lights in the park . . . wait, never mind that. . . .

Strange website message after I sent a message to another member via the MB.
