CP Petition Drive

Submitted by HWoods on Wed, 02/23/2011 - 12:26pm

I wanted to repost this from another so it becomes it's own thread...

OK. So we've all talked this ticket blitz to death. We all know how important it is to be able to train in Central Park. We've all emailed our Mayor and city council person (you have, right?)

Now it's time to take it to a whole new level. We're going to organize a petition drive in Central Park.

The plan will be to post 2 or 3 person teams at strategic stoplights in the park once a week on Friday mornings all Spring long. We're calling on everyone who rides in the park to take a stand and pull a shift in the park.

Central Park Update

In case you missed it on the homepage, we've banded together with our friends at CRCA, 5BBC, TWC and Transportation Alternatives and sent a letter to Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly.

It is a statement of our collective concern about the unreasonable enforcement, a request for a meeting and a fair solution.

Accident Reporting

Submitted by GKaplan on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 5:48pm

This past week, the NYC Council passed a package of bills – Intros. 370-A, 374-A and 377-A – that will greatly improve the way the city reports and responds to pedestrian and bike-related accidents.

One of the things we've learned from our constituents over the years is that knowledge and cooperation are key if we're going to effectively work together to keep our streets safe and prevent future accidents.

In addition to requiring the New York Police Department (NYPD) to publish statistics about car crashes, traffic deaths and pedestrian injuries on its website once a month, Intro. 370-A requires the NYC Department of Transportation to:

• to conduct a comprehensive study of all traffic crashes involving a serious injury or fatality every five years;

SIGS ..the same as Spinning Class?!.

Submitted by SYoung on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 12:26am

As I don't like to ride in the snow, ice, wind or below 20 degrees I've been taking a few Spin classes to keep my biking legs... I realized the many similarities(?) between a SIG and a Spin Class....

SPIN: 45 minutes of riding (less 5 minures for stretching)
SIG: All day of riding
SPIN: Brittany or Rhiannon (or both) blaring in your ears
SIG: Good conversation or sounds of birds/ocean (think its called nature)
SPIN: Teacher offers Zen encouragement (you're getting stronger/ the hill is like your problems that you must conquer)
SIG: Leaders teach you how to become stronger/faster riders
SPIN: If a "hill" is too challening you can turn knob on bike and decrease steepness
SIG: Sense of accomplishment (exhaustion) of climbing every hill on ride
SPIN: Fluffy towels at disposal

too cold and any water on the roads will be frozen.

This note could be nested in any one of several other threads but I presume to give it its own moment in the light lest it be overlooked.

"sgnoka" (Is that you, John T?) offered the following link in Alan Resnick's Sunday riding in CP thread. http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precincts/precinct_022.shtml

Here is truly astonishing information that comes out of that link. The link lists the members of the Central Park Community Council under a photo of CP police precinct Capt. Philip Wishnia (the man who was so darn entertaining at the recent, oft-mentioned roundtable meeting, telling us he was not targeting cyclists but, instead, was simply enforcing all laws even-handedly).
