circa 1985

"the wheelmen and wheelwomen, were not without controversy, some of it as current as today. Not all cyclists were careful, and there were instances of children being run over, and several fatalities of both riders and pedestrians."

Cop cites gal for tote-bag 'hazard'

The city is dying for a few good cyclists -- but handbag owners need not apply.

A Nightingale-Bamford School executive was pulled over by a cop while cycling on Columbus Avenue and slapped with a ticket for -- of all things -- pedaling with a tote bag strapped to her handlebars.

This is hilarious

Free: Toeclips--MKS chrome (small) and Zefal plastique (large)

Submitted by CWood on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 12:25pm

Beautiful chrome MKS toeclips (no straps). Very good condition. Too small for me.

A generous NYCCer gave me these Zefal toeclips in a size Large. They have served their purpose--convinced me I do indeed need a size Medium. So I am passing them along

NY1's "The Call" discusses bike lanes (and pedestrian plazas)

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 9:49pm

It was on TV tonight. It wasn't pretty.

http://www.ny1.com/content/the_call/the_call_blog/

The media won't let this topic go. They know some people are angry (in a very big media market) and anytime they want, they can drum up hundreds of "complaints" about road improvements that are helping people stay alive. The more hostility they can generate toward the mayor (and toward us), the higher their ratings go.

I know it's always been the case that people have thought bikes don't belong on the streets and that NYC cyclists were crazy, but this time the hate seems to be surging without end.
