This may be the most compelling article about bike racing I've ever read.

Be advised: It's long, very long. And very much not about bike racing. But start it and see if you're pulled in by it.

Late add-on rather than add a post: Yes, Carol (below), the Rwandan Cycling Team

It seems to me the interest of our membership is so heavily tilted towards cycling as sport and recreation as to be exceedingly slight for cycling as "mere" transportation. Nevertheless, I post this, which I just came across this from three days ago. I'm delighted to see the Times give space to such as this (seemingly in opposition to the NY Post, Daily News, and dependably hysterical Marcia "Calamity" Kramer who, one wishes, could undergo a thought-lift to match her face lift).

Warning: Riverside Drive muggers waiting for cyclists

Submitted by David Brabyn on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 11:37pm

Watch out anyone using Riverside Drive. I got pushed off my bike as I was riding Southbound at about 15mph right the bridge (above Dinosaur's) ends and the park starts.

As I came up alongside a guy standing in the street, he shouldered me and sent me crashing to the ground. He was waiting there with 2 accomplices for a cyclist to ride by and steal his/her bike. They left, with the bike, towards Broadway. The police canvased the area but couldn't find them. Description: skinny, shirtless, short hair, African-American, early twenties, males. I only suffered abrasions and contusions on my right side. I shudder to think what would have happened had I not worn a helmet. It would seem they have no qualms putting someone in a coma to get a bike.

Warwick-Beacon Loop - great ride!

Submitted by KBrady on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 9:59pm

A quick thank you to Ron Roth, who I think is the author of the Warwick-Beacon Loop cue sheet in the "Rides" section of this site.

I used it to ride from the GWB to Warwick yesterday (7/31/2011) and what a great route!  Through lots of residential areas (i.e. little traffic, few potholes) and then through beautiful Harriman Park!  I've been wanting to ride to Warwick for years and this route was perfect.  Even the 3 monster mountains at the end were fine, though challenging - and this for a steady B16 rider!

I'll do the end part (Warwick to Beacon) as a separate ride another time, but what a great resource the ride library is - thanks!

Submitted by iforst on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 5:42pm

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone know exactly where you can get on the East River Bikepath and ride all the way down to lower manhattan. I know there is an extrance around E20th st, but I believe there is an entrance somewhere in the E30s. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks,

Israel

Please "withdraw" from a ride if you change your mind about joining it

Submitted by abrowning on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 4:21pm

Its come to our attention that many people who sign up for rides and then decide not to join are not "withdrawing" from the ride online, which will allow others to join a "sold out" ride.  This is a relatively new function to the website, and easy to use.  Please be considerate of others, try to plan ahead, and "withdraw" from any ride you've signed up for but decide not to join, as soon as you make that decision.

Many thanks
