Teach Adults and Kids how to Ride Bikes!

Submitted by thaney on Wed, 08/10/2011 - 2:59pm

Bike New York, a non-profit bicycling organization, is looking for volunteers to teach our bike education classes.

Bike New York volunteers give New Yorkers the life-changing skill of riding a bicycle through teaching bike education classes.  Our classes are free to the public, and held in all five boroughs, from the spring to the fall.  Once volunteers go through a brief (and free) training session, they are qualified to teach students of all ages how to ride bicycles, and how to handle their bicycles responsibly and safely.  Volunteers are compensated with sweet prizes, many fun social events, and based on amount of time volunteering, free entry to Bike New York rides, including the 5 Boro Tour.

Does anyone know where in Manhattan I might find a detailed bike map of the Munich area? I'm specifically interested in a bike route along the Isar river.

what to do w/old chains?

Submitted by GYang on Wed, 08/10/2011 - 12:55pm

I hate wasting good stuff.

Just changed my chain after reaching the 0.75% stretch mark. It still "looks" good-cleaned up it would look even better. Its a DA 10 speed chain.

Suggestions for what to do with it? would Recycle a Bicycle want it? Jewelry? Art? Physics teachers? Rube goldberg devices?

Chain change?

Submitted by PatCH on Wed, 08/10/2011 - 12:44pm

What's the current wisdom for changing chains? I have about 1500-2000 miles on my current chain, and don't have any problems with skipping or anything, but I got a Park Tool chain checker thingy yesterday, and it says my chain is stretched out. Do I need to change the chain and cassette at the same time, or can I keep the old cassette (which was changed with the last chain)? The cassette looks pretty solid still. Are there problems with using my current cassette with a new chain? Many thanks for words of advice!
