pacific coast bike trip this summer

Submitted by ztaxin on Sun, 04/15/2012 - 3:23pm

Hello fellow NYCCers!

I am taking off some time this summer to do the PCH bike trip.  It is one of the most beautiful trips in the world (so I've heard), and is super easy to navigate.  I'm planning on camping and I have a tent and all that jazz.  I'm happy to do the trip alone, but thought it would be fun to train and/or go with some other enthusiasts.  My dates are tentative--mid June to early August.  I have to be back by August 5th for a wedding, so I'm planning on doing a mid-summer thing.  I won't be free until June 15th to start.

The PCH trip is roughly 1500 miles, which is only 50 miles a day for 30 days.  Not too shabby!

Tiagra to 105 upgrade help

Submitted by MFulton on Sun, 04/15/2012 - 2:48pm

Seriously considering "upgrading" my shifters, cassette, and front derailleur from Tiagra to 105. My front derailleur is dead, and I recently replaced my Tiagra rear derailleur with 105. Rather than search for a 9-speed compatible 105 front derailleur, or try my luck with another Tiagra, I'm thinking I'll upgrade to 10 speed.

Does anyone know how much having a shop do this might cost, including components?

More importantly, does anyone have any recommendations for a shop in Manhattan that could do this?

Thanks.

Is there a queue sheet for getting from Queens to Manhattan and vice versa using the 59th St bridge?  If not, can someone give me detailed instructions?

Thanks.

Bike Discussion on NPR's Talk of the Nation

This past week, the National Public Radio show Talk of the Nation featured a discussion that included Bill Strickland, editor of Bicycling magazine. The conversation with Strickland was a follow-on to a recent print article that discussed bike lanes and cyclists who obey traffic laws or disregard them.

Will ride early Saturday at about an 18 pace....

Hoping to be back before noon. A little climbing a little cruising, a quick stop somewhere. Typically I'd do River Road and come back 9W but open to suggestions as long as I can get 50 - 60 miles in, more or less. Happy to leave around 8ish. Email if interested. RJS515 at AOL.com
