Dave Jordan Memorial Ride on Sunday

Submitted by abrowning on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 9:12am

Note from CRCA President:

Closer to many of us personally was Dave Jordan, our immediate past president who passed away last week.  There has been a huge outpouring of support and emotion for Dave.  Working with other cyclists in the community who were close to Dave, we have arranged to hold a memorial ride for Dave this Sunday.  The ride will start after the completion of the Lot Maltese race and the award ceremonies for each field. There are four races taking place and the finishes should start from about 7:30 through 8:00am, so arrive early to watch the current crop of CRCA races compete - its a fitting day to have a great crowd at the Cat's Paw finish line.

Pedals permitted in carry-on luggage?

Submitted by MGately on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 8:48am

Does anyone know if pedals are permitted in carry-on luggage? I'm flying Delta to Portland (Oregon) later today, bringing my Look pedals, and hoping to avoid checking a bag. (I'm not traveling with a bike.) I expect pedal wrenches are not permitted in carry-on - no tools longer than 7" - but can't find TSA information on pedals. Thanks.

East River greenway at 78th - reopened in February!

Submitted by JFeinberg on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 7:39am

The east river greenway had been impassably closed at 78th street in October 2010, with a sign saying it would be reopened in August 2011.  Needless to say, when August 2011 rolled around the greenway was still blocked.  The other day I saw some bikers walking down the stairs at the 81st street overpass, so I checked out the greenway.  The construction is done, and the greenway is open again!  You can again get from 59th street all the way up to 120.

Apparently it reopened in late January:

The next east river greenway project will be to replace the 81st street overpass and stairs with a 2 block long ramp:

Just FYI "Ironman U.S. Championship" will take place on Saturday, August 11

I almost sign up for a ride on Saturday, 08/11 and then I realized that Ironman U.S. Championship will be held on that day.

Not sure all of the rides posted will be affected by it but I thought I should bring it to your attention.

Pedestrian/cyclist accident on HH in CP this evening

Submitted by Cmoore on Tue, 07/10/2012 - 8:25pm

I'm not sure what happened, but there were two humans down for multiple climb workout laps this evening. It looked like the cyclist got the worst of it, judging by medical attention.

Hope everyone is alright, and cyclists are staying very alert/respectful while doing laps in CP.

I know I pissed off numerous time trialist/racer types by observing red lights and encouraging the pedestrians to use their green lights, but we very much need to project as much cooperative energy as we can, however stupid pedestrian behavior occasionally is in CP. It is far too valuable a resource to act like assholes who don't care about anything but speed. 6pm is no time for fast laps.

River Road for Working Stiffs - UPDATE!

Submitted by Slugger on Tue, 07/10/2012 - 5:31pm

Due to the road debris on 9W, the route has changed. We will now go out and back on River Road, turning around at the Police Station.

I will roll away from the NY side of the GWB at 5:45. Please be there at 5:35 to get signed in. So far, I only have one pickup on the NJ side, so if you'd like to meet us over there, email me tonight.

Perhaps someone knows where to forward this info.

The Eastside 72nd St Central Park roadway has now been re-laned creating a Bicycle lane going INTO the park drive joining the main bike loop.

The result from 2 car lanes in and 2 lanes out of the park now has 3(?) lanes OUT, 1 lane in and the Bike lane.

Sounds great…Right.

Of course not because that would make sense.

On several trips through the park during the day (before 7pm) the new bike lane is now a PARKING SPOT for either:

a) The Boathouse Shuttle BUS

b) Several Bicycle Pedi-cabs

Before the re-laning cyclists would just manage or take a lane until they entered the Park and joined the MAIN

9W swept...it WAS a mess, now OK! Thanks!

Submitted by GYang on Tue, 07/10/2012 - 8:43am

9W is fine now, back to "normal". Thanks to all those at NYCC and various DOT's that remedied the situation so quickly!

A street cleaner has gone over 9W from Palisades to Alpine Approach in both directions. Perhaps further north as well.

Unfortunately the road is now a mess!

All the gravel and sh!t that was way off to the side is now all over the shoulder or right lane. Mostly its gravel and sand but there is some glass and other stuff mixed in. Plus, the sweeper didnt pick up the dead racoon just north of sage on the northbound side.

There is also the flattened dessicated carcass of a 5 foot long snake between the shoulder and car lane just north of there as well

Tuesday early AM pesticide spraying on RR - is this a weekly happening?

Submitted by Cmoore on Tue, 07/10/2012 - 8:12am

I headed out for an early RR ride this morning to be greeted by a "pesticide being sprayed - no cyclists/ pedestrians/ runners allowed" sign. Does anyone happen to know if this is a regularly occurring event, or with whom one might inquire to find out?
