Getting my bike to Europe for a bike tour?

Submitted by jwah on Sun, 05/05/2013 - 3:58pm

Hey Everyone!  Could use some bike travelling advice here -

I'm travelling to Provence this July to partake in a cycling tour in the area - and I was wondering - can anyone offer advice on travelling/shipping a bike over?  Seems like it might be quite a hassle to carry a bike around on a plane or by train - so I'd like to hear what other people have done in terms of riding overseas with their bike.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd certainly be open to them.  Thanks in advance!

Caution on Strawtown Road

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Sat, 05/04/2013 - 7:38pm

Just north of Mill (Germonds on the left, Mill on the right), past the four-way stop sign, do NOT be tricked by the gorgeous new paving.  There are deep gouges, some with manholes, some with those small, round thingies, and some just waiting to be filled in.  It's VERY shadowy there due to the lush trees.  I hit something today and went down...hard.  Would like to prevent anyone else from doing the same.

I had to cancel my reservation.  The woman said she's not full yet, so if you're looking for a nice B&B, call the Windflower in South Egremont.  413-528-2720

Safest Route from Union NJ to GWB.

Submitted by HCampos Jr on Fri, 05/03/2013 - 4:36pm

Hello Everyone,

I'm planning to ride from work (Union NJ) to Queens. Not too familiar with the NJ area. What is the safest way to get to GWB or would it be safer just to ride to the ferry and go from there?

Please help!!

An "events" sticky?

Submitted by TShepard on Fri, 05/03/2013 - 1:07pm

Last summer there was an "events" sticky that helpfully listed events that would conflict with cycling activites. As I recall, the focus was primarily on Central Park.

I would love to see a return of the events sticky - or maybe even a feature of the eWeekly - now that the weather is warming and events are proliferating. E.g., half marathon closing River Road on Sunday morning; Revlon Walk ending in CP tomorrow morning.

CitiBikes

Submitted by P. Lee on Fri, 05/03/2013 - 11:34am

I'm finally getting to the point of believing that the CitiBikes system will become reality.  I'm seeing the stations going up all over the place!

And, of course, law suits have already started.  The homeowner's association at 99 Bank Street is trying to have a station removed from the cobblestone street in front of their building claiming that danger is posed because cyclists will be riding on their sidewalk to avoid the cobblestones.  I suspect the real reason is the loss of a couple of parking spaces.

Considering that block is only 150 feet long, it's a pretty ludicrous complaint.
