Reminder: Grant's Tomb Crit tomorrow
Tomorrow is going to be GLORIOUS! Gorgeous! Wonderful! It will be such a great day...for a race!
Just a reminder that the Grant's Tomb criterium is tomorrow, meaning you won't be able to get up Riverside Drive. Or, swing by and cheer for all the Kissenas (and boo all those Dave Jordan people* ;)) and then head over the bridge. The races last all morning, but you should be fine coming home.
*Given that it seems like Jordan is populated almost entirely by A Siggies, you could maaaaybe cheer for them, too... ;)
Want bike lanes on Morningside Avenue in Harlem? Sign the petition
The NYC Dept. of Transportation has proposed a redesign for Morningside Avenue in Harlem. (Note: Morningside Avenue is on the east side of Morningside Park; it should not be confused with Morningside Drive which is on the west side.)
The redesign has been approved by Manhattan Community Board 9 and is under consideration by CB10. It reduces 2 lanes of traffic to 1 lane each way and adds a median strip for left turns. Curiously, it does not include bike lanes, although there is enough room for a 5 ft. bike lane in each direction without reducing parking spaces and without reducing the width of vehicle travel lanes.
TRAFFIC SKILLS - WORKSHOP and RIDE
The sad, sad coda to the law firm that was so helpful to us pro bono.
It was, as I recall, in 1993 that the law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb gave the NYCC (and co-plaintiff, TA) pro bono help that was wayyy past generous. We sued the City over its imposition of a 15MPH speed limit on bicycles in Central Park. Then Parks Comm. Betsy Gotbaum (later Public Advocate), responded to complaints of fast-riding, weaving, long pacelines of wannabe racers/pretend racers/or actual racers scaring the hell out of park users, notably in the evenings, by having a chauffer drive her once around the park. That was pretty much her research and that one, chauffer-driven lap led her to instate the 15MPH limit.
Bike travel case rental?
Hi All
I am flying to Houston for an MS 150 ride and taking my road bike with me. As I do not intend to reguarly fly with my bike it does not make much sense to spend a lot of money on a travel case I may only use once (and then have to store in an apartment!).
Anybody know if there are local bike shops who rent cases? Anyone have a travel case that they would consider renting out for April 8 to 16?
I have a cardboard bike box that I could ground ship the bike ahead with, but looks like UPS shipping for a bike is around $130 each way.
Cheers
John
Alternative route to David's Bagels?
Anyone have a good route to get from the GWB to David's Bagel's / 202 that goes further to the west and bypasses Little Tor / South Mtn Road? I browsed the ride library and everything I’ve turned up seems to follow the usual route up Orchards.
Or if anyone has a recommendation for another good snack stop on the way to Harriman I'm all ears. Any input is appreciated, thanks!
Compiling resource about road bike rental in NY
We seem to get frequently enquiries about where to rent road bikes. I decided to compile a short resource sheet to put up on the web's resource center for future reference. If you KNOW of a shop that rents "real" road bikes (not the usual tourist clunker hybrid) let me know. Don't just send me a random list of bike shop names - I can google that myself but if you know of a shop that rents such bikes, let me know.

New Wheels
Well i just retrievd my bike from my buddies barn where it has been sitting since an accident last season that put me on the DL for the duration.
The rims on my wheels (Campy Neutrons) have deep gouges and are shot. To replace the rims (did i mention Campagnolo) apparently involves replacing all the nuts/nipples and plates and becomes almost as much as buying a new set of wheels.
Not to mention I can't seem to source the nuts and plates anywhere.
