Hands still cold after all you do?

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 03/08/2015 - 7:11pm

If you cannot maintain warmth to your hands along your arms, you will have cold hands. [Yes, you can use chemical or electric heaters in you gloves or mittens, but the fix I propose is simpler]

If you put on another layer over your torso just to add another layer on your arms, you risk overheating.

Try this runners trick.

Cut the end off of an old pair of tube socks, [they can be cotton as your arm will not sweat] and place them under your arm warmers. You can wear all this under your outer jacket. Yes, I am advocating arm warmers over your jersey but under your jacket. Insulating peripheral circulation is akin to plumbers wrapping heating pipes from the furnace.

shoe cover recommendations

Submitted by whistler on Sun, 03/08/2015 - 11:49am

Looking for a rec on shoe covers. B-SIG trial was *COLD*, I normally don't ride below 50 degrees but looks like I have no choice to buck up and gear up.

Features to look for if any? Any sites to look for sales?

TIA, pleasure to be riding with you all.

New NYCC domain name.

There is a new domain extension now available .BIKE

Dedicated to all things in the world of cycling.

The domain NYCC.BIKE is currently available.

In light of the fuss everyone kicked up over Rapha's new Cycle Club New York.. or what ever they wound up calling it, would it not be an idea for the club to snap up this domain before someone else does. It's only 30 bucks..

Board are you listening..

Anyone been in Central today? I'm considering an evening ride tonight. Is it dry, wet, sloppy, fine?

Big thanks!

ALERT: Parkview Ave / Scarsdale Road between Bronxville and Scarsdale - it's terrible

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Sat, 03/07/2015 - 4:44pm

Parkview Ave / Scarsdale Road as of 3/7/2015...

The road is very torn up in sections. It's beyond potholes, it's cratered. Quite perilous. A northern portion of it was not even plowed at all, so it's a ride through softpack snow.

If you need to take it, be extremely cautious and be prepared to ride across the double yellow (wait for all traffic to clear) to avoid some hazards. Reroutes are advised for maximum safety.

It would need to be substantially repaved for it to be worry-free again. Please leave a note here if you notice the problematic sections are repaired. I think it'll be fixed just after the spring thaw (it's that bad), but you never know.

Is anyone doing Ride the Rockies this year?

I got in the lottery, wondering if anyone else is in and would like a roomate?

Also- looking for suggestions for EASY mountain biking rental/ tours in the Grand Junction area for a day or two while acclimating to altitude.

action on street issues - shared doc

Crappy bike lanes, cars parked in bike lanes, giant crater-like pot holes in crosswalks and in bike-lanes that don't get fixed.. are you as frustrated about this as I am? If so, let's get something done about it.

The department of transportation has created a great app for complaints: 'NYC 311'. Let's use the app to start reporting infrastructure issues, and documenting there here:

Perhaps NYCC can rent a large truck to carry the bikes across the bridge and the cyclists can bus across it--Rockland County looks beautiful today--one big Curier & Ives  picture  with major roads well plowed and dry.
