Question about van cortland park bike path

Submitted by kommie on Sat, 04/25/2015 - 11:21am

I am seeking info about this park's  bike path.  I ride with my son,who is  teenager. I am thinking of riding the Van Cortland Park trail north from the south end of the park.  I would like to know:

Is the trail hilly, or a dfficult ride? We are casual cylists riding hybrid bikes.  We can do a 30 mile, reasonaby flat, ride.   I assume that it is safe. How crowded is it on  nice weekend morning?

When we get to the north end of park, I think we can connect with other parks. How do the parks connect?  Will we need to ride in traffic?

How far north can we go before we get to the end, or to some hills that casual cyclists would consider challenging?   I have looked at maps, but it is unclear

Hudson Terrace is completely repaved and was open to traffic this afternoon. It is not yet restriped; there are just some yellow marks where the center line will be.

CP Police renew their preferential enforcement policies

Submitted by AResnick on Thu, 04/23/2015 - 3:46pm

For the last 3 days I have witnessed cyclists being stopped by CP police for going thru red lights.  I have also avoided dozens of pedestrians "space walking" thru red lights; with the GREEN light in my direction-with no police intervention.  Just like last year.

Why don't the police consider our safety from pedestrian fault?

Hudson Terrace Milling Has Started, Alternate Route Suggestion

Submitted by RSchmon on Tue, 04/21/2015 - 7:26pm

The milling and repaving has started on Hudson Terrace and riding north the traffic was being diverted over to 9W on Bayview Ave.  I elected to ride over to 9W as did other cyclists I saw, but if you want to take on the milled pavement I was told cyclists were being allowed through on Hudson Terrace--though I can't personally confirm that.

…why doesn't the NYPD simply sit along any bikeway and ticket cyclists going the wrong way?

• It would be easy ticketing of "low-hanging fruit," just like riders in Central Park, the difference being they'd actually address a real problem. Ticketing a cyclist riding the wrong way would be no harder than ticketing someone rolling through a red light in the park. In fact, it would be even easier.

• In terms of PR for the NYPD, news media would LOVE this and feature it prominently on newscasts and in the papers…

• …and both pedestrians and cyclists would applaud it, as well. Everyone wins (except salmoning cyclists).

So… why has this not happened?
