The Bicycle and the Ride to Modern America

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Wed, 07/15/2015 - 10:41am

Fun article from The New York Times about an exhibition at the Smithsonian.  It asks an interesting question, "The Bicycle, invention or discovery?"

"Tires and tubing, mass production and women’s suffrage, highways and gas stations all were influenced by the machine, the Bicycle,  featured in a new Smithsonian exhibit."

scouting ride to L.I.

Submitted by DAumand on Tue, 07/14/2015 - 11:55pm
I would like to try and lead some rides to L.I., but need to do a few scouting rides before i feel comfortable taking out a group. i was thinking about going this Saturday if anyone would like to join me and help. I'll use one of the que sheets to Syosset or Oyster Bay. My pace is a B15, but i expect we'll be stopping a lot to check the route. There'll be pit stops but a short lunch so we can get back. E-mail me if you're interested in helping scout this ride. Daria [email protected].

Silly sightseeing rides?

Submitted by April on Tue, 07/14/2015 - 10:25pm

"Theme rides" is a better sounding name I heard. Basically, rides that go to places of special (read: silly) interests only appeal to some subset of the membership population.

A side benefit of visiting out of way places, such routes would typically includes roads no one thought of riding. Sometimes nice, quiet country roads, other times scenic but unpaved sections with significant ascent/descent.
