ENY- Long term growth requires Long Term Planning...

Submitted by slunetta on Tue, 11/01/2016 - 8:20pm

Sustainable growth requires a solid infrastructure and a plan. We need to know the laws and have systems in place that will survive a change in personnel. 5 years ago we could have put a 15 ft tall structure in Sakura with no issues. If you tried to do that now, you would need certified engineering drawings and a host of additional items.

The rules have changed and so has the market. We need to be able to offer something unique and lasting. When you go to buy a bike, do you look at anything with downtube shifters? We have been working very hard to get ENY reinvigorated to we can thrive in the modern market place.

Why you don't always want to carry Road ID.

Two cyclists are out late when they get caught in a thunderstorm. So they pull up to a farm and to ask if they could spend the night.  And older woman answers the door.

speeding ticket at Dykman Hill in Palisades on the bicycle

Submitted by pompy1234 on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 1:07pm

I was going downhill and got a ticket by the officer. I do not own a license.

Anybody ever experienced a speeding ticket on the bicycle that says $0 in penalties ?

Seems it's mandatory to show up at the court and I can't pay anything online.

I'm a bit confused with the situation as I was told by the officer that I could pay online.

Also, the ticket says doing 46mi on a 25mi limit. My strava log says I never went over 38mi. Should I bring this up when I go to the court ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am bit in shock with this incident.

Thanks,

Just north of Grant's tomb there's a freshly cut trough going across Riverside Dr. northbound. (I don't know if it also extends across the southbound side.) It's right at the bottom of the little hill, just before you go onto the bridge over Fairway, so you tend to be going fast at that point. The trough is about 12" wide and 3-4" deep and has sharp edges. It gave me a pinch flat this morning and could cause a bad crash. BE CAREFUL! It's not marked in any way, so you don't see it until you're almost on it.

Apparently the Carroll Gardens eatery is opening in the long vacant large restaurant space  south of the library on the east side of the street.  Hopefully the menu will be cycling friendly and it will have outdoor seating and more than one small rest room!

ENY 2017 and beyond..

Submitted by slunetta on Sun, 10/30/2016 - 8:43pm

I was recently asked about what I think ENY will look like in the future. I love that question. I think it is important that there needs to be a long term strategic plant to ensure that ENY can grow in a sustainable way.

Let’s start with Sakura:

Long term Sakura Park is too small to handle the type of crowds we want at the Start and Finish Line Festival. The promenade and plaza in front of Grant’s Tomb would enable us to grow larger without moving too far from the historical Start/Finish location.

Here is a concept:https://www.dropbox.com/s/9u37cjtedx7y8n3/2016%20Concepts_Layout%201.pdf?dl=0

...And maybe the club treasury would contribute something. And, hey, even you, yes, YOU, dear reader....

Think of it as a Remember Irv observance. Say what? You don't remember our longtime member, 75 year old Irv Schacter, or how he was killed? Uh, by a cyclist. In the park. While training to run in the marathon. But this does more than remember Irv. It goes to TA. In other words, a few steps removed, it goes to you.
