Likely data harvesting by Discord, the new club messaging app.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Wed, 07/26/2023 - 8:28am

I went to sign-up to the club site on Discord and find you have to surrender personal data, in this case your birthday. The claim is to protect young 'uns from receiving inapporpiate stuff. As if you couldn't lie about your age. And as if the club, itself, doesn't screen for inappropriate stuff.

It's probably due to my superannuated age and general, overall cussedness that I balk at putting out personal data that you just know will be harvested and stored/traded/sold/used in ways we just as soon not be, a/k/a commercially.

Club financials.

The club president referred to moving to a new plaform to replace the MB as, among other benefits, being cost saving. ...Which led me to look for the club financials. I can't find them on the MB. Where are they? And how much is in the club bank account now?

Happy Birthday, former NYCC president Geo Kaplan, age 93 today.

George Kaplan, NYCC president in 1993, '94, and '95 is 93 today. To speak with him on the phone is to be speaking with a man in his 20s. Really. All the force, energy, speed, thought, vocabulary of a young man.

Van Cortlandt Park Restrooms

Submitted by mhsimkin on Tue, 07/25/2023 - 11:14am

The restrooms at the Nature Center and along Broadway have been closed since July 12th.

I received the below from the VCP Alliance this morning. If all members can reach out to the elected officals listed below it would be appreciated.  Otherwise, it sounds like these facilities will be closed for a significant amount of time.

Should be a great day for a very nice ride in the countryside of New Jersey.

Bear Mtn/Popolo Bridge

Submitted by schaller56 on Mon, 07/24/2023 - 5:53am

I don't see a posting on this although I suspect most know that Bear Mtn is closed and as of yesterday, staff were there diverting cars and bikes.

However, not so evident is that bikes can get across the Popolo Bridge (9W just north of Bear Mtn bridge).  The  roadway approach is completely washed away, but somehow there is a sidewalk on the west side of the bridge that is in perfecto condition.  The very friendly workmen were happy to point it out.  Of course, with Storm King Hwy closed, not a lot of reason to go that way.

D2R2 -- anyone else?

Submitted by George_S on Sun, 07/23/2023 - 9:09pm

Just wondering if any other NYCC members have signed up for the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee on Saturday, August 19th ( https://www.franklinlandtrust.org/d2r2/ ) ?

I was a bit late signing up and missed the cut-off for the classic 100k so will be doing the new 60k/40k dual loop ( https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43014294 ).

Would be interesting in say "Hello" to any other NYCC'ers who might be there.

Garmin / Windows PC Connection Issues

Submitted by msiegel on Fri, 07/21/2023 - 10:48pm

I apologize if this is a niche topic, but has anyone else recently started having issues connecting a Garmin device (Garmin Edge 530 in my case) to their PC to load up rides?

This worked fine until a couple weeks ago, and suddnely no matter what I try, I can't get my PC to recognize the device.

I've been digging through various posts online with no luck -- anyone else have this problem? Have you managed to find the solution?

Seven Lakes Drive east of Tiorati Circle

Submitted by schaller56 on Fri, 07/21/2023 - 6:27am

Officially, this is closed after the rainstorm earlier this month.  There is a photo on the state police website showing some damage, but it's a little like River Road after the storm 2-3 yrs ago.  Has anyone biked through on Seven Lakes?
