Calling All Techies: NYCC App?

Submitted by ninagski on Mon, 01/15/2018 - 12:16pm

Has the NYCC considered developing an app? I usually only search for upcoming rides on my phone, and when I have scheduling changes I also unlist/relist on my phone. It’s quite cumbersome to always have to login and scroll and zoom on an iPhone. I’m not a developer, but maybe there could be some sort of app building volunteer team? Would make the message board more user friendly as well. Just food for thought...

Parking Options near GWB for early weekday AM riding

Submitted by agrisafi on Sat, 01/13/2018 - 12:46pm

As some of you already know, I've just moved out to N Jersey. I know some fellow riders who live almost as far out as I do now that participate in the AM River Rd rides during the summer.   When the weather improves, I'd like to drive to the GWB, maybe do River Rd in the morning then head down to work on my bike, or just have the option to ride back and forth to work from the NJ side of the GWB.  Anyone with suggestions on best places for parking in the area please let me know.  Unfortunately, the ride from my house to the GWB is too far for a training ride.

A New Kind of Bicycle Helmet!

Submitted by JOlson on Fri, 01/12/2018 - 8:49pm

A small, entrepreneurial start-up company which happens to have office space in the same WeWork office that I use is developing a new kind of bicycle helmet which will, if successful, exceed current safety standards while having the appearance (more or less) of a baseball cap, and which will roll up to a size that fits into the drink holder on any bike.

Does Anyone Know the Condition of the Greenway for Cycling?

Submitted by JOlson on Thu, 01/11/2018 - 6:34pm

Friday, 11 January.

Has anybody ridden the Greenway today or in the past couple of days?

Snow or not? Wet or dry? etc.

Much appreciate your advice. Can't wait to get back on a bike after the recent combination of extreme cold followed by snow, freezing rain, and slush!

Petition for protected cross-town bike lanes in Manhattan

Submitted by ARosenthal on Wed, 01/10/2018 - 1:36am

Transportation Alternatives is sponsoring a petition to support cross-town bike lanes on the Upper West Side. The plan is to present this to Community Board 7. The longer term goal is to have protected bike lanes installed from "river to river". You can access the petition at: https://campaigns.transalt.org/petition/upper-west-side-protected-crosst...

If you ride in NJ, please help us get this bill passed!

Submitted by Cyndi on Tue, 01/09/2018 - 3:00pm

NYCC'ers, please help us get a bill signed by Gov Christie. It's S2894/A4165- which requires the state's driver's education curriculum, driver's ed manual and the license exam to include bike and pedestrian safety. Right now- there's almost nothing, which is partially why you will often hear the common refrain, "Roads are for CARS!" when you pedal in our fair state.

But Gov Christie has one last chance to change that- ok, start to change that- by signing this bill into law before it expires next Tuesday, Jan 16th- which is before our new Governor takes office. That's how it works.
