Watch Nasbar's and Performance's bankruptcy right before your very own eyes.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Thu, 02/07/2019 - 10:16pm

Go to each store's website. Click on their clothing. Oops. Nothing there? Well, nothing at Performance and only a pair of rain pants at Nashbar. Accessories? Same. Bikes? Yeah, some.

95 emplyees at their holding company's facility in Chapel Hill were laid off yesterday. They had 104 retail stores. All going, going, soon (March 2, it is thought) gone. 1700 employees: going, going, soon gone.  This follows the approval of its bankruptcy sale last week. But, ahhh, the websites are likely to continue. However, read this, which pre-dates the bankruptcy approval.....

Any Austin, Tx cyclist transplants?

Submitted by jhof on Thu, 02/07/2019 - 8:34am

Hi All. I'm planning a move to NYC and am trying to understand the "scene" here. I currently live in Austin, Tx, which has a healthy racing communty, great group rides every day and a few bike shops that have a sort of "ski lodge" vibe as road cyclists/group rides come and go during the day.

I thought it might be interesting to see if there are any other Ausitn transplants who could compare rides/shops in Austin to similar offerings here in NYC. Of course, I welcome all input and have reviewed the NYCC rides here on the site.

NYCC's "Self-Test Table"

Submitted by jcraig280 on Thu, 02/07/2019 - 6:48am

The D ride thread had me wondering if the club might consider adjusting the "Self Test" table in the About Rides section?  In nutshell, thinking that if a time = 18mph, the table should recommend a eg. B16 (reduce by 2)

I think I'm pointing out the obvious, but while NYCC ride ratings are supposed to be based on "cruising speed" or sometimes "speed on flat roads", the self-test table is returning guidelines based on a time trial using your overall average moving speed for the whole ride.

Cycling and lowered bone density: a new elephant walks into the room

Gretchen Reynolds likes to question basic assumptions. We look to our champions to reinforce our beliefs, but sometimes the news is less than good. From what I read here, not enough studies including relevant variables to our cohorts asks more questions than supply answers.

a "D" ride

Would there be any interest in having a D ride for those people that have trouble keeping up on the "C"rides.maybe 30miles +/- and low teens mph?

A new menace in Central Park.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Tue, 02/05/2019 - 5:07pm

I went for my second ride since late October: all of two laps in Central Park. That followed a desultory three laps Monday. Now with those five laps in the bag, I've got all my base miles in.

Is there some way to include a spell checker?

Encountered some cyclist rage on Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge on the weekend

Video footage linked above, thankfully I was riding about with my GoPro on.

I've been riding around in NYC for a year and a bit right now and I always try to be chill and to follow bike lanes according to conditions. Had my first with cycling rage on the weekend around 1:45pm this past super bowl Sunday. Let's not be jerks to each other, cycling around NYC is hard enough.
