For the big tire crowd

Submitted by mgeller1 on Thu, 01/24/2019 - 7:21am

Anyone use Panacer Gravel King tires? Are they suitable for both gravel and road? Right now on Compass Stampede. I understand the Gravel King will be a bit more puncture resistant. How is the ride quality? Right now I'm using it for winter road riding.

Novel use of my shoe covers today

Submitted by MHiller on Wed, 01/23/2019 - 4:42pm

I go for runs in relatively thin shoes, with some (wool, ideally) sock underneath. But not much sock thickness; not enough room for it.

This setup is fine for running, even to a fairly low temperature (significantly subfreezing), but sometimes I'm on a Citi Bike to get to a run meetup or similar. My feet get cold riding that way, especially the toes.

Today I routed around this by bringing my shoe covers along, just wearing them over my running shoes. Whilst Citi Biking. Totally worked! :)

Tailwind Endurance - I don't recommend it

Submitted by leorar on Wed, 01/23/2019 - 12:05am

I took my first Tailwind class yesterday and had such a bad experience that I wanted to give everyone a heads up. Based on my class yesterday, I wouldn't recommend them.

I'm a newer cyclist, so I was really excited about the prospect of being coached on my form. However, there wasn't any coaching. The guy who introduced himself as the coach, Gabriel, spent the entire class scrolling through his facebook and occaisonally reading the onscreen instructions aloud. He didn't provide feedback to me or anyone else. When I asked him for help in improving my form, he told said he wasn't a coach and couldn't help me.

At the January Club Meeting, NYCC Board Members we asked to share their winter cycling tips.  Here's mine with links.  In addition, a recommendation on tires.  For the record, I ride down to the low 20s.

Winter ride planning strategies include:

Sorry  - the rain, gale force winds, and falling temps are too much.

Maybe we'll have better weather for next week's Galaxy ride.  Hope to see you then.

It was just announced Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos broke her hip socket and pelvis in a bike accident a couple weeks ago. (Her injury hadn't been thought that severe. She is in a wheelchair). At least then Sec. of State John Kerry only broke his femur in his bike crash near Geneva in 2015.
