City Hall Rally for Introduction of Rodriguez/Gentile Bill - Wednesday, March 23, 1 PM
The “Flashing Yellow Light” bill of City Council Members Rodriguez and Gentile will be submitted at the next City Council meeting this coming Wednesday, March 23.
The steps of City Hall have been reserved for a Press Conference at 1:00pm (sharp).
The bill's sponsors have asked us to be there in the largest numbers we can possibly muster.
If you at all can, your presence will be valuable.
Arrive at 12:45pm on Wednesday so the conference can begin at 1:00 pm.
The council meeting itself begins at 1:30....so it'll be short.
Our friends from the press will no doubt be there....NY Post, NY Times, the blogosphere.
ticketing in CP this morning
Waiting at TOG at 6 this morning, a fast group sped by on the park road, maybe about 10 cyclists, couldn't tell which team. When my group was riding around the turn heading north, a police van was parked perpendicular to the road, flashing lights, and it appeared that all of the cyclsits in that fast group had been stopped and were being asked for IDs. Does anyone know what happened there? As a counterpoint, a police car was stopped at a light on the next loop, and the policeman told everyone to go through the red lights, he didn't care if anyone went through red lights when there was no traffic in the park. One of the riders with me pointed out that he was a transit cop, which is different than a regular NYC cop. Just a heads up.
If only this was the law here
From this week's RoadBikeRider:
"In the Netherlands the principle of "Strict Liability" is legally enforced. In insurance claims, strict liability apportions blame to a vehicle operator, not the victim of a collision. So, a driver who rams a cyclist is automatically deemed to be at fault unless the driver can prove the cyclist was negligent. And a cyclist who rams a pedestrian is automatically deemed to be at fault unless the cyclist can prove the pedestrian was negligent.
The expectation is that drivers should be aware that they are in control of vehicles that can kill, and to therefore behave responsibly and appropriately for the driving conditions at the time.
