Looking for Voluntees to ride ICMs Century Ride

Submitted by I Challenge Myself on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 3:54pm

I Challenge Myself (ICM), a non-competitive sports based youth development program, addresses the health and fitness epidemic in low income communities of NYC. Through its Cycling Smarts program ICM works with more than 120 students annually at four New York City public high schools, using fitness based challenges to help students develop physically, academically and socially.

Long-Life Tires?

Submitted by PStorey on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 2:06pm

I've been a devotee of Michelin Axial Carbons for the last seven years.  They weigh a touch more than some others, but they've been good for 3500 miles or more, and they've been quite good about flats.

Unfortunately, I'm down to my last one, and recent production of the successor tire -- the Krylion -- is rumored to have a lot of production defects.  Does anyone have a strong recommendation for a "training" tire that lasts forever, doesn't flat much (without riding like it's armor-plated) and comes in 25-622?  In a perfect world, yellow stripes would be a nice touch, but non-essential.

River Road

I reviewed the cycling rules on the PIP website, which state that when the gates are closed it applies to all users, and wrote to the general e-mail address enquiring about the Alpine Approach Road which is gated closed for the winter. I received the following helpful and reassuring reply which I post for the general reassurance of all:

Harvard Alum? Opportunity to meet Ray Kelly

Submitted by DRosenberg on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:13pm

This Thursday, there is an opportunity for those who went to Harvard Kennedy School or are members of the Harvard Club to meet Ray Kelly.  He is giving a private speech.  Usually, there is a Q and A after the speech.  A motivated person can usually talk to the speaker before of after the speech/Q&A privately.  I went to Harvard Kennedy School but have an event for my daughter thursday night and won't be able to attend.  If you fit into either of those categories, call me, and I'll tell you how to get on the list.  If you don't fall into those categories but are a Harvard alum, call me anyway.  There might be an opportunity for you to attened the event.  It would be nice if someone from the club could personally speak to Ray Kelly a

training question - hydration levels

Submitted by GYang on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:57am

I spin a fair amount and drink about 0.75 Liters of water in a 45 minute class.

On the other hand on a 4 hour club ride I might drink 1-1.5 Liters - so less water per hour.

I am wondering if my body is adapting to the high levels of hydration during spinning on one hand, but because of this is less prepared to deal with the lower hydration levels on the club rides.

Should I try to drink less during spinning class to force my system to adapt to the lower hydration levels during "real" rides?
