New $35M Short Clove greatly improves awful 9W Haverstraw stretch

Submitted by JJacobson on Sat, 10/29/2011 - 12:52pm

Opened yesterday, the new road has 2 fly-over bridges to carry traffic  safely and smoothly  over the CSX railroad tracks as it connects Riverside Ave & 9W.It offers majestic riv vus.  I assume bicyling is permitted on it.

Hillary Clinton once called this "the most dangerous railroad crossing I've seen anywhere"  Tilcon's large quarry trucks and all other traffic often backed up on 9W whenever a train came and pretty much landlocked the village of Haverstraw.

I rode on 9W a few days ago which is greatly improved.  The project  cost $5,000,000 more than anticipated.

This will facilitate our riding through the Haverstraw and Stony Point Marina Districts and onto  Bear Mountain & West Point.

Sunday Trailway Ride Canceled - Replaced by Manhattan/Brooklyn City Walk

Submitted by nymultisport on Sat, 10/29/2011 - 7:53am

The thought of 30 riders, plowing through miles of snow or glaze--however deep--atop downed branches and wet leaves, leaves something to be desired. Instead, you're invited to meet the leaders at 9:00AM at Zaros (concourse at Penn Station) for breakfast, followed by a walk on the High Line, then continuing downtown. Perhaps lunch at Juniors in Brooklyn. Everyone welcome, signed-up for the ride or not... just show up before we depart Zaros at 9:30.

MRI overuse, abuse, misdiagnosis, but patients still want them

Dr. James Andrews, a widely known sports medicine orthopedist in Gulf Breeze, Fla., wanted to test his suspicion that M.R.I.’s, the scans given to almost every injured athlete or casual exerciser, might be a bit misleading. So he scanned the shoulders of 31 perfectly healthy professional baseball pitchers.

Fall Foliage Ride #3 Cancelled

Submitted by WWright on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 3:53pm

Tomorrow's Fall Foliage Ride #3 to Bedford/Stamford is cancelled.  Every weather forecast I've looked at for tomorrow predicts bleak cycling conditions.  I'm not keen on cancelling the night before the ride, but conditions would have to change drastically between now and tomorrow morning to have a rideable day.

What can I say, it's been a tough weather for cycling all year long.  You can now sleep in or stay up late watching all of World Series game 7, even if it's a 19 inning game!

Many thanks to all who helped out with this year's series - especially the leaders who scouted rides ahead of time.  This series has become too big for me to manage it on my own.
