Two things pissed me off today. One involves the NYCC

Submitted by RRosenthal on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 7:57pm

1.

Time: Sunday, July 22, 9:33AM

Place: East Drive in Central Park

Cyclist pours through a red light while a mother and child, who were in the roadway, starting to cross on their green, flinch and step back, out of the cyclist's way. She, the cyclist, is wearing a NYCC racing team jersey.

Note to rider: When you ride without consideration for the rights-of-way of others, please do so wearing a jersey that won't be associated with the NYCC. It reflects on the club and its members.

2.

Garbage truck driver cuts into a line of cyclists.

Me (to driver): "You saw the cyclists?"

Driver: "No. Sorry."

Comment: Per capita, or decapita, garbage truck drivers kill more cyclists than any other driver.

Visions of your worst nightmare on the Greenway

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 5:45pm

A couple of days ago, returning from a long ride, going south on the Hudson Greenway I passed 2 parents and a daughter going in my same direction. Further up the path I passed what appears to be another child. A bit further on was a prepubescent lad, no doubt a son of the family. Without looking back, he does a quick u-turn to return to his family.

This is the sort of thing that could have easily gone from a pleasant family ride to a tragedy involving a stranger, from zero to 120 in a fraction of a second. This is your cycling bolt out of the blue.

Had you been a defensive cyclist going at good pace, you would have passed him wide. But his turn would have taken you out regardlessly. And in the process it could have sent the lad into the next world.

The commercialization of our club continues. And in my mind it's squalid, it's tawdry for us to allow it.

Just the first page of our Marketplace page has seven ads for a bike shop. Ah, yes, it is owned by a club member. Does that make it/them different? TTere's another shop that has a free ad, but it supports ENY by letting the event use its parking lot. Does that make it different? And, of course, there is the space given over to advertising the companies that contribute product to the meeting raffles when asked to do so.

Rode the Trailways from VC Park to Millwood today: sections are in terrible shape

Submitted by HSchiffman on Fri, 07/20/2018 - 10:58pm

Potenially the Trailways is a great resource.

The new Elmsford section is lovely. Pavement in some sections are holding up well. The Mile Square/Tuckahoe Rd section one.

But other sections are deteriorating rapidly. Sections are rippling and tearing. One cannot use these parts on a bike at any reasonable speed. Some sections are just plain unsafe. That is too bad as it is so direct a route going north/south.

A reminder of timing for reserving trains on Metro North

Metro North protocol dictates that we cannot reserve train passage past Tuesday afternoon prior to the current weekend.

Who might carry Mavic Aksium bladed spokes in Manhattan?

Submitted by RSchoenbohm on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 2:53pm

Broke a spoke this morning and neither Sid's or Bicycle Habitat have any in stock. Those two are my go-to shops so I am now clueless. 298mm straight pull ('rear right'), bladed, and hopefully silver. Thanks in advance!

Bike lock?

I need to buy a new bike lock. Any recommendations?  Not sure what size? 4ft? 6ft?

thanks

You're not still riding slow, skinny tires, are you?

Submitted by RKaufman on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 11:15am

Still riding 23 or 25 mm tires? I switched to 42 mm Grand Bois Extra Leger on my main bike - a Boulder All Road 650B - a few years ago. Faster, smoother and decidedly more comfortable! Particularly on the roads typically found within 100 miles of here. Think about going wider if you haven't already:

Chrusty Guzzetta injured in bike crash

Submitted by GRoss on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 7:07am

Christy Guzzetta suffered a fall and was injured in a crash in Central Park. My understanding is that a pothole was responsible. He won't be able to ride for much of this summer. The good news is he apparently won't require surgery.

Get Well Soon Christy!
