West Side Greenway closed below 181st St

Submitted by jzisfein on Sat, 08/25/2018 - 5:33pm

Going southbound, barricades are up today (Saturday 8/25) at the top of the steep descent that takes you over the Amtrak bridge and then past the lighthouse. Per the posting, this is for "inspection". My guess is they're inspecting that decrepit bridge.

The work-around is to cross the parkway on-ramp and take the path on the opposite side. That path quickly becomes unpaved but partially rideable. It leads to a different bridge over the tracks (in better condition) that leads to a staircase where you can carry your bike down to the greenway just south of the tennis courts.

Riverside Drive pavement stripping

Submitted by EMarks on Fri, 08/24/2018 - 4:13pm

Is this old news and I missed it? I just discovered it today.

Riverside Drive is stripped from about 165th down to 160th, and again from about 153rd down to 151st. Repaving to occur ... soon, I hope.

FYI.

Very false elevation gaiin on Ridewithgps when crossing the GWB?

Submitted by RRosenthal on Fri, 08/24/2018 - 12:35am

I'm a bit late coming to this dance. I just looked at the profile of a ride that crosses the GWB. Is it the case the elevation gain is calculated from the level of the river which would make the total gain very false? That appears to be the case--roundtrip no less.

A note of thanks to the ROBO ride leaders

Submitted by charlesoward on Thu, 08/23/2018 - 3:26pm

I wanted to write a quick "thank you" to the fellows who ran the ROBO ride this morning at ToG.  This was a new ride for me.  I was nervous.  Immediately upon arriving I was welcomed by Paul, one of the leaders.  The ride leaders clearly explained to all the logistics of the ride, and off we went in an organized fashion.  The whole thing was a class act.

Thanks.  I will be back.

Fairly frequent stop for some of our rides, wasn't quick but it was good. We have other options for rest stops / lunch in up-hill Ossining but we've lost a good one.

For years I have recommended that cyclists avoid that stretch. Tweed and Piermont Ave/River Rd are good and safer substitutes.  Fortuneately his head injury and fractures were not that major and he was released  from Nyack Hospital the next day.
