Hi! I'm just wondering when sign-up for the 2013 SIGs and STSs will be open. I'm already excited to sign up and don't want to miss my chance!

Thanks,

Tara

Cold weather riding advice

Submitted by sfl on Mon, 10/01/2012 - 8:27am

Hi there,

Being new to cold weather cycling, I'm not so sure what approach is best.  I'm thinking nycc pros can help here :)

I recently went up to Nyack (from LES) for the 2nd time and found I had issues with one of my knees. I've heard things like "keep your knees warm" but Saturday's temperature didn't seem to warrant full tights (60F or so) - short bibs and short sleeve jersey felt fine as long as I was moving. I don't think I'll be riding in the dead of winter (20F and such) but I'd love to ride until ice/snow become a problem. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

SF

From Stony Point To Bear Mountain

Submitted by MTownsend on Sun, 09/30/2012 - 10:07pm

I have to attend an overnight retreat at Stony Mountain Center on Thursday evening into Friday morning.  We're supposed to be finished by noon so I'm thinking that will give me enough time to get in a quick trip up Bear Mountain.

The thing is that I don't really know how to get there.  Does anyone know that are well and could provide me with some rudimentary directions?

Thanks, Matt

Was I being helpful, neutral/at-least-inoffensive, or offensive here?

So, I was climbing on the River Road/GWB connector path this morning, and near the top of the hill I cone across a late 30s looking couple and their toddler child on the path. They have a large stroller, but the kid is outside the stroller toddling along.

Between the width of the stroller, which is all the way to my left, and Dad/kid's positions side-by-side in the middle of the path, they're occupying about two-thirds of the width of the path.

As I pass, I comment, matter-of-factly: "There will be fast cyclists coming down this hill. You may want to walk single-file." Per the topic name, was that out of line? I'll share the reaction this elicited in a followup...

Internet Bicycle Forums

I'm getting back into bicycling after a long hiatus and have newly rejoined the NYCC forum.  Can anyone reccommend a good forum to ask questions on?  Obviously this is a great forum ;-)  My interests are: Commuting, theft prevention, new bicycle purchase, internally geared hubs, and maybe even belt drive.  A quick search found these forums:

B/18 Bakery Rides 9/30 and 10/7

Submitted by DHudes on Sat, 09/29/2012 - 8:45pm

I'm off to Monsey to pick up challah and other goodies from one of my favorite bakeries: Zishe's Hiomemade Bakery of Monsey and I invite interested riders to join me. I've got a route planned which will take us on some nice tree-lined streets through Bergen and Rockland. The return route is fast, with a long section (miles) of a mild downhill and few traffic lights.

I'm going to have a rack and panniers on my bike so I can bring home stuff (experience shows that a backpack doesn't work well).

There is a kosher deli across the street from the bakery if you want real food rather than pastries for lunch.

This route is 64 miles round-trip and has about 3400 feet of climbing.

On 9/30 expect to return about 4PM; on 10/7, about 5pm.
