Ride from Montauk

Submitted by DHudes on Fri, 05/24/2013 - 9:33am

There is stiill room for 4 more on this Sunday's  100 mile ride from Montauk to Dix Hills with a stop for dinner at my Mom in Dix Hills. Train leaves Penn 6:45AM / Jamaica 7:10 AM.  The route I have is 101 miles with 2940 feet elevation gain. Maximum elevation 282 feet at mile 95.3 . Noticeable climbs: mile 12.4 for 1.4 mile (+160 feet looks like reaches almost 4% at one point); mile 85.9  for 250 feet gain in 9.4 miles with a max gradient of 7% (followed by a 100 feet elevation loss in about .2 miles max gradient almost 5% and rollers for a mile then it's downhill for 1.2 miles, left and mild downgrade for another half mile to dinner).

Ireland cycling

Submitted by MBruckner on Fri, 05/24/2013 - 2:57am

I'm going to be in Ireland for about a week in July and would love to get in some riding. Does anyone have suggestions for either road or (easy) mountain biking?

I've read about this 42km rail trail that looks interesting: http://www.greenway.ie/Trail-MN-01.html but other thoughts are welcome.

The Memorial Day Berkshires Weekend is On - Rain or Shine

Submitted by RFranco on Thu, 05/23/2013 - 9:10pm

I have received a few phone calls asking whether the weekend is happening.  The answer is a solid YES!  This weekend has never been cancelled; we don't let the forecast of rain stop us.  Pack layers since the forecast ranges from high 30s to low 70s.  If someone forgets their sunscreen, then it will be sunny.  If we all pack rain gear, it won't rain.  Whatever the weather, we are going to have a great time!  See you all in the Berkshires.

Late notice but, given the forecast, I've decided to drive up Friday morning at this point and maybe ride up there (i.e. from Sheffield) on the off-chance the weather has cleared.

In case anyone is  interested, I have room for two other passengers in the car (I can take three total including myself).

Anyone from Queens?

Hi.  New member here.

Is anyone here a cyclist from Queens?  I'm looking to perhaps lead some rides in the Queens area but I want some experience riding with a group first.

Come Ride with the Westchester Cycle Club on Memorial Day!

Submitted by passingham on Thu, 05/23/2013 - 4:13pm

Come join the WCC for a great Memorial Day ride from Cold Spring Metro North Station!  We call it "Two Bridges for Memorial Day": In honor of the day, we will visit significant sites and scenic sights alike as we ride through this famous area of our region, filled with history of this country's eventful and fateful fight for freedom.  Arrive by 8:30 to leave at 8:45 (as not to interfere with the parade).

B15 ride from Southeast to Great Barrington on Friday - new time/route

Submitted by LWintner on Thu, 05/23/2013 - 12:00pm

We just decided to change the route because of the bad weather forecast for tomorrow.  We'll be catching the 6:03am train to Wassaic and doing a shorter, easier route to Sheffield/Great Barrington in the Berkshires.  Please see ride listing for the details.

Quick report on last night's, 5/22 Bronx CB8 Parks Committee "Putnam" meeting

Submitted by NWeissman on Thu, 05/23/2013 - 10:46am

NYC Parks made a detailed presentation of its rationale for the hybrid paved-dirt treatment which includes considerable environmental remediation.  Rich Conroy and I joined a roughly even mix of community and cyclist-wheelchair speakers.  NY Roadrunners President Mary Wittenberg spoke *against* the Parks proposal, favoring a 100% crushed stone solution.  Committee finally voted 3 yes, 3 no, 2 abstain on a resolution favoring the Parks proposal.  The proposal goes to full CB8 in June.  All these votes are advisory.  Parks can proceed regardless.
