Granny gears
I'm currently riding a bike with a 34/50 in the front and 10 speeds -12-28 in the back. I'm often finding I can't spin enough on big climbs and my cadance drops below 60. Does it make sense to upgrade to 11-32 in the back? Will I feel a difference? Or do I need to improve my muscles and not my gear ratios?
Texas State Senator Wendy Davis is also a Cyclist
You may have heard of Wendy Davis putting an epic speech of a filibuster, last night (06/25/2013) in the Texas State Senate. She spoke for over 10 hours without a break or sitting down and other silly requirements imposed on her. Guess her stamina could be attributed to her running and....CYCLING.
From the Lockheed Martin Recreation Area Bicycle Club (Ft. Worth, TX):
Has there ever been a push to make bike theft a felony?
Everybody seems to just accept bike theft as a way of life in NYC. One article mentioned 70,000 - another 100,000 - as the number of bikes stolen annually in NYC. It's insane. Bikes are portable, easy to resell, there's basically no chance of getting caught, and, if a thief does get caught, the punishment is so trivial that one can see why the police wouldn't even bother. If the police do arrest somebody, the DA's office often doesn't give a damn. There's basically no reason for a thief to not continue what he's doing.
At least upgrading the crime to felony status would slightly shift the risk/reward balance
Newcomer's Ride Question
Hi,
Would it be OK if I brought a friend with me to the Newcomer's ride to Piermont this weekend? I'm trying to encourage him to join the club and I thought this would be a good ride for him to get introduced. I'm relatively new to NYCC (2nd year) and would love to get a buddy to come join the weekend club rides.
Thanks,
Mike

Harriman State park question: Avoiding Palisades when riding from Harriman to Bear on Seven Lakes Drive?
Probably asked before, but could not find the answer.
Is there a way to go from Sebago lake in Harriman state park to Bear mountain without having to get on Palisades?
We were riding north on Seven lakes drive when we got to the roundabout… in seemed that in order to get to Bear, we had to get on the palisades (decided to turn around).
Thanks

South NJ Bike Clubs
I'm looking for reccomendatations for a friend whose dad lives in South NJ, and is looking for groups to cycle with. He tried a local bike shop but the group was a bit fast for him and he got sick of being dropped.
Any reccomendations for groups in that area that organize speed-graded group rides ?
Lost Wheel
Had a bit of hectic day yesterday, and while packing up my bike and my friend's bike into my car, I managed to leave my front wheel on the grass or leaned against the stone wall next to a parking meter on Hudson Terrace near the GWB in Fort Lee.
I realized my stupidity a couple of hours later and sped back, but alas no wheel to be found.
In case anybody found it, please let me know - it's a red-rimmed handbuilt and I can name the sub-components. And of course, a reward.
Thanks,
George
