opinions on the safety value of spoke lights?

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 01/11/2014 - 11:48am

I bike exclusively pre-dawn 3-4x/week for about 2 hours each ride.  Of course I wear a reflective vest and ankle bands plust the front light and rear lights.

My wife gave me some vintage Energizer Wheelie spoke lights (circa 2002) and I have been using them for the past two months.  One went south and I sent it back for a warranty replacement - good luck with that.

So, should I purchase some similar type replacements?  At first they seemed like a novelty to me but after using them for a few months I do believe they add to my visibility on the road.  Nite Ize Spokelit is the most similar replacement.

Submitted by YehuditS on Fri, 01/10/2014 - 4:25pm

does anyone know or know where I can find instructions how to install a vintage front brake Shimano 600 series. I can't figure out how to attach the cable to the brake pivots.

Just wondering if anyone can report the conditions. Is it clear of ice and snow?

Do you like CitiBikes? Are you antsy to ride this month? (Ride Posting!!)

Well I might have a thing for you, this Sunday!

The current weather forecast is 52 degrees and much/all of the snow should be melted and gone at that point. So let's do this relatively short, relatively slow, totally social ride and see how it works out!

Frozen gel saddle

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 3:38pm

I have a soft squishy gel saddle on my commuter bike.  The “arctic vortex” that has overwhelmed our area of late has frozen the gel in my saddle solid.  When I rode to work this morning, all I have to say is, ouch!  Then, to make matters worse, when I arrived at work and locked my bike to a pole, I look up and what do I see in the store window right in front of me?  Yup, a full display of Spring fashions.  Very confusing!

New SRAM 9 Speed Chain - Remove the Factory Lube or Not?

Submitted by RSchoenbohm on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 3:17pm

Found this on-line:

SRAM chains use Gleitmo, a high quality industrial chain lube (not just a surface protectant), that is applied by hot dipping in a vat of it at the factory so it penetrates into all the internals of the chain where it is most needed. Its not really suited for home use, first because its only available in large commercial quantities, second the method of application as above, and third its very expensive! SRAM themselves recommend you run with the original lubricant for as long as possible before adding your own.

However the lube that SRAM uses is thick, sticky and wax-like. I can't believe it will not be a dirt magnet. My sense is to clean the surface, just the surface, and re-lube with a good qualtity chain lube.

Thoughts?

Ride the 5 Boro Bike Tour for Charity

Submitted by TLipshie on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 12:46pm

Registration for the 5 Boro opens January 14th, and before you pay for a slot I would like to invite everyone to consider riding for a charity. As a charity rider, you are guaranteed a start in the first wave toward the front (right behind the VIP riders). A continental breakfast at the start and box lunch on Staten Island are also provided. I've done it for the past 5 years and have enjoyed the ride each time - no disasters, no bottlenecks, yes you still have to wait for the ferry.

All charities are required to apply for a slot and are vetted by the ride organizers, so you can take your pick and rest assured that you are riding for a legitimate organization. If you can't decide, come ride with me for Bronxworks

A Request About A Request for “feedfront" on The Presidents Speak.

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 10:18am

i had sent an email last week...

it might be a good idea if a reply was sent to those who may have (like me) sent in a suggestion or two... something along the lines of, "thanks for the suggestions, hope to see you at the meeting"...

whether my suggestions are used or not, it would be nice to know that they were received...
