I recommend adding a master link to your basic road repair kit

Submitted by GRoss on Sat, 08/22/2015 - 7:56pm

Twice this summer we have had a chain break on a ride. in both cases someone on the ride was carrying a master link (Michael Roth on the newcomer's ride and me today) and we were able to repair the chain quickly and get our fellow club member up and riding. In one case we needed to remove a link because the cheeks had been bent and in the other we simply had to re-link the chain.

Master links can be purchased for a few dollars, weigh nothing and take up almost no space in one's kit. Be careful to get one that is compatible with your chain: for example, a link for a 9 speed chain won't fit a 10 speed chain (the chains are different widths).

Master Bike Shop Review?

Submitted by johnvic on Thu, 08/20/2015 - 10:22pm

Any thoughts on Master Bike Shop? I went there today because someone on a recent NYCC ride reccomended them since I ride a Bianchi and am looking for a new bike. Imbert seemed nice and helpful, he had 2 bikes that I would try and was willing to discount well. His list on the Bianchi was higher than the MSRP but after discount it's a good deal in my range.

Don't route thru Tarrytown Sept. 18-20

Submitted by CWaaser on Wed, 08/19/2015 - 1:13pm

The "Crafts at Lyndhurst" festival is taking place Sept. 18-20.  Every year during this festival, automobile traffic on Broadway/US 9 south of Tarrytown is hideous, backed up in both directions, with lots of cars entering and exiting the grounds at Lyndhurst (about 1/2 mile south of the Tappan Zee). You'd be wise to avoid that stretch on your bikes.

Wireless Cateye not working?

Hello everyone

I bought a wireless Cateye and I could NOT get it to work. I tried everything. Then I watched this video:

...and bought the magnets. I finally got them and installed one magnet and it works like a charm.

I had to buy a pack of magnets - so I have several left over. If you would like one - just ask.

WEST POINT CENTURY Sept. 5

Submitted by JJacobson on Wed, 08/19/2015 - 8:40am

Small handful of NYCC members has opening for 1 or 2 more B16 cyclists for informal 100 mile ride.  After being closed to cyclists for years after 9/11 we now  have written permission to cycle thru West Point and  after crossing the Hudson at Newburgh/Beacon to take the train  back to NYC. Route includes leaving NYC at 7 AM and brilliant scenery in Piermont/Nyack, Rockland Lake, Haverstraw/Stony Point Marina districts, Bear Mountain, arguably the most beautiful road in the metro area: Route 218 into Cornwall, Cold Spring, etc.  Early bailouts at 60 & 80 miles available and probable train arrival for everyone in NYC 7 PM ish.  Please email me ([email protected]) if you want to join us.
