GFNY Training and prep - anyone else prepping for May?

Submitted by neil_e_whitfiel... on Mon, 02/17/2025 - 4:34pm

Bit of a multi-part question here so aplogies if this isn't the place.

Skippable backstory:
I graduated the B-18 Sig a few years back but have been off the bike for a while. I'm 48 and a few pounds the wrong side of 200. For some insane reason me and my brother-in-law have signed up for the GFNY (I've done it twice and have rolled home in the final thousand). And thanks to this awful weather, I am already behind in my preparation.

So...

I want to do a pretty robust 12-week training program starting March 1, with the aim to be ready to go on May 18th.

My questions:

Hydraulic Disc brake issue

Submitted by pffddspc on Fri, 01/17/2025 - 8:08pm

I was in an accident and had to replace a brake caliper.  Ever since, I need to replace the hydraulic brake fluid on a regular basis, for which I go to a bike shop.  I either need a bike shop that can figure out how to fix it once and for all, find a class to teach me how to deal with hydraulic disc brakes so that I might maintenance the problem, or sell the bike to a handier person than myself.  A fourth option is to replace with mechanical disc brake set-up.  Any suggestions?

The weather gods strike again.  Sorry to cancel.  I'll relist it soon.

Sad News - - passing of member Alfredo Garcia

Submitted by SRodetis on Fri, 01/17/2025 - 9:50am

Alfredo passed away on Monday, and there's an open visitation in Manhattan this Sunday afternoon.

He was a member of both NYCC and 5BBC, participated in many bike related volunteer activities, and was a consumate gentleman and nice person - - a gentle and kind soul.

Many may recall him from (what used to be) NYCC's annual pre-Marathon Ride.
