Bronx River Bike Tour, April 23

Submitted by [email protected] on Mon, 03/28/2011 - 6:22am

Did you know that the Bronx River is NYC's only true freshwater river?  The Bronx River was considered a source for NYC's drinking water in the early 1830's. By the end of the 1800's it was labeled "an open sewer." The river has made a comeback since the days of reckless dumping and now supports many forms of aquatic life like Alewife Herring and even a beaver named “Jose.”

Come be awed by its beauty and bike with NYC H2O and the Bronx River Alliance as we tour the Bronx River from its mouth on the Long Island Sound to its source in Valhalla.

Weekday Rides This Week

Submitted by EParedes on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 7:51pm

Anyone not working this week up for some long daytime rides? I'm available Mon, Tues, & Wed (maybe Thurs too) and aiming to get anywhere from 50 to 75 miles in each day (ie- Orchards, Little Tor type rides). Would love to have some company. I'm an "A rider" but a slow one, especially on the climbs. I'm not looking to go fast, but a solid endurance/tempo pace without stopping much. If you're interested, contact me offline on: [email protected]

Report: top of Perkins still under snow, Saturday, March 26th

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 3:34am

2 cyclists had I met on Metro North yesterday returning to GCT on the Hudson Line, reported they were stopped on their ascent of Perkins (Bear Mtn access road) about a half mile from the summit as the road was still covered in snow. A photo on a smart phone sure looked that way to me.
