Ticketing in Prospect Park?

Submitted by TArjo on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 3:43pm

Saw a long line of police cars and vans at the bottom of the hill on West Lake Drive, 2pm to 3pm. Radar guns were out, not sure if they were issuing tickets.

Keep an eye out Brooklynites!

As I understand it, bicyclists are allowed teh same rights and priveledges as vehicles. Not more or less. So as ugly as the current situation is, I think it should be noted that this can get much, much worse. If the above logic is extended, then the authorities could legitimately lock us out of CP during ALL "non-vehicle" hours.

So I think we should be very careful in how we react to this ticket blitz. It seems clear the Mayor and CPP (at the very least) want us leisurely and slowly enjoying the Park- or gone. And I think they'd prefer the latter.

How can we best claim the priveledges we seem to have naively taken for granted for too long? I don't know, but a strategic plan, with sound legal advice seems utterly necessary.

Spring into hills April 3rd

Submitted by DHudes on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 1:27pm

I have planned a pretty hilly route.  The purpose of this ride is to work on climbing without doing hill repeats of the same hill again and again. I have a route planned which will climb many of the hills of the lower Hudson Valley more or less as far as Nyack. Currently, the route is 58 miles round-trip with 4200 feet of elevation gain. We will regroup at the top of major climbs, of which there are 4.

How do I get started ?

Im 26 new to NY and would like to start riding a road bike :)  Whats the most affordable way to do this? Is there a way to lease a bike for the next 5 months so I can see if it’s something I’d like to invest in, I know it’s not cheap. Also is there a way I could get a lesson from someone to kind of show me road bike etiquette, emergency maneuvers and bail strategies for when I lose control going down a hill.... if I could just get some feedback as to how I’ll be able to pick this up on the cheap I’d appreciate it.

Just starting a new discussion.

If you object, please contact the Parks Department, Conservancy, the Boro President, the Mayor.  Probably NYPD though they clearly do not care.

More to follow.

Important Reminder

Wednesday, 1:00 p.m., City Hall, Press Conference.  Yes, it's going to be damp out.  Yes, you have to work.  Yes, you have all kinds of excuses why you can't make it.  BE THERE!  This is important.  Schedule Wednesday's lunch hour from 12:40 - 1:40, bring a sandwich to eat at your desk or on the train.  Be at City Hall at 12:55, you'll be back on the train by 1:25.  Make the sacrifice to show how important pro-cycling legislation is for the City.  (Even if you don't think the "flashing yellow" lights is the right solution, we have to show there is a strong, large cycling contingent in the City that wants pro-cycling legislation.  This is just the first pass, and there will be more oportunity to refine

We'll ride up river road and then paceline back on 9W.

This is the ride that Sharon Shachar usually leads; she's out of town this week so I'm posting.

Tuesday / Thursday 5:45AM A-19 Central Park Rides

Submitted by grogers on Mon, 03/21/2011 - 6:20pm

Tuesday / Thursday early morning Central Park Rides - 5:45am Tavern on the Green - we'll wait for you until 5:50am - then we roll. Tuesday focus on hill repeats. Thursday interval training. Who is in???

See below. Agenda includes "Continued discussion of enforcement of traffic signal regulations with regard to bicyclers in Central Park" and "Update on proposed east-west bike routes in Central Park."

I assume a big turnout is key, and speaking particularly from people who live in the area of CB 7 (Upper West Side - 59th to 110th, CPW to Hudson River) especially useful.
