Cycling accident on Bowery

Submitted by simono1 on Wed, 03/23/2011 - 10:54am

Hi!

I was hit on the Bowery last night, and my bike is toast. The driver pulled a U turn onto my side of the road, crossing a double yellow line - is that illegal? I know the car hit me on my side of the road, as I had to crawl across the double yellows to get out of the traffic, and was nearly hit by another car. Also, if there were passengers in the vehicle, and they claim in the police report that I was on the wrong side of the road - do they count as witnesses? I was too banged up to chase after anyone who may have been an independent witness.

The driver then tried to stop the ambulance taking me away saying I was not injured badly enough - nice! The police did get there and a report is filed

Brewer Bill to Close Park to Cars to be Reintroduced Today

Submitted by mg on Wed, 03/23/2011 - 10:37am

According to the NY Post Gale Brewer is going to reintroduce her bill to close the park to traffic today.

In my opinion this is more preferable to the yellow lights bill and probably has a greater chance of passing.

Police Apologize in Person for Cyclist’s Ticket in Park
March 22, 2011

David Regen was sitting down to dinner Tuesday night when two police officers appeared at his home under circumstances that will instantly evoke envy from any New Yorker who has ever been issued a ticket.

The officers had come over to apologize for a ticket issued to him earlier that day.

“They said, ‘We’re here because we’re withdrawing your ticket because we feel you were treated unfairly,’ ” Mr. Regen recalled about an hour later in a telephone interview.

Today's speeding tickets in Central Park to be voided

Submitted by EJaffe on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 6:59pm

10 tickets were issued today at the speed trap.

All 10 tickets will be voided.

Every person ticketed should hear from the NYPD this evening or tomorrow.

If you do not, please email [email protected]

You will not have to go to court.

This is the doing of Chief Morris of NYPD Manhattan North, with whom we have met, who was chagrined to hear of the tickets, who personally called me earlier to share this and ask that it be passed along.

Benepe claimed to me (in writing) speed limit in CP is 25MPH.

Submitted by cyerkes on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 4:03pm

Below is a message I send about speeding enforcement on cyclist in Central Park, with a quoted email from adrien benepe, direct or Central Park Conservancy:

Mr. Benepe:

I am very concerned and, up till now, have not taken any actions directly about the cycling issues in Central Park.

But today the police started enforcing a 15 MPH limit in central park, while at the same time, NOT enforcing cars speeding with half as much vigor.
