Submitted by hansjatzke on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 3:14pm
My girlfriend and I are in breckenridge colorado visiting my newborne neice and wanted to get advice on biking out here. Does anyone know and good routes? We have a car and are willing to go pretty far for some good biking. We dont have any bikes with us so we would need to rent, any advice on a good rental place would be great. My girlfriend and sister will be accompanying me on the ride(s) and arent as experienced bikers. Any advice or leads would be most appreciated. Thanks, Hans

A.S.S. Ride #3: Damon + Felicia + Cold Spring.

Submitted by HWoods on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 6:05am

An awesome After Sig Series Saturday. Perfect route, diverse group, beautiful weather, and of course that amazing decent into the Depot. All managed well by the very, very capable team of Damon Strub and Felicia Ennis who we all know will lead many great rides for a long time to come. A get well soon to Vitaly's wheel. Special thanks to SIG Leaders Bob, Betsy and George--it's always nice to have experience in the line. And thanks to the SIG itself for producing great wheels like Damon and Felicia. Here's a pic on the hardpack. Next Saturday, A-Classic Boss Tombaugh and her team haul A.S.S. up  Storm King.

ride boilerplate and aero bars

Submitted by DHudes on Sat, 06/18/2011 - 10:42pm

Club policy prohibits aero bars on club rides just as it requires helmets and prohibits earphones. Please update the ride listing boilerplate to add a clause reminding riders that aero bars are prohibited. I continue to get inquiries from those who have clip-on aero bars who are loathe to remove them .

Also would appreciate an official club explanation on the website to which I could point inquirers which explains why we prohibit them.

Something terrific about the NYCC membership.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Sat, 06/18/2011 - 5:56pm

There were five of us on my ride today. (The word must be out about it. Or, more likely, me.)

No two from the same country. Five people. Five countries: The Netherlands, Poland, Rumania, Colombia, and Detroit.

Moreover, a Ph.D. microbiologist at Mt. Sinai (not to be confused with the NYCC member who is a Ph.D. microbiologist at Rockefeller University) and a combined M.D. and Ph.D. student at Columbia working in neuroscience.

I am dazzled by the international component of our membership and the accomplishment of a great many members.

Late B Ride Listing 45 Miles Through NJ's Great Swamp Wildlife Preserve

Submitted by FHarris on Sat, 06/18/2011 - 5:21pm

The Great Swamp Ride consists of a twisted figure 8 loop passing through and around the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. A remnant of a glacial lake in southern Morris and northern Somerset counties, the Great Swamp forms the source of the Passaic River. The Great Swamp is one of the truly unspoiled natural jewels of the region. Just 25 miles west of New York City you’ll be serenaded by frogs and accompanied by turtles as you enjoy the many resident bird species, including the majestic blue heron. Eagles are frequently seen.  Meeting at Penn Station at 8:45am for 9:11am train to Summit (Dover Line).  If interested, sign up on ride listing or text me at 347-987-1951.

Japan relief rides

Submitted by jpiven on Fri, 06/17/2011 - 10:06pm

Hiya folks,

A few months ago some friends and I organized a hundred-mile bicycle ride through the wilds of Cleveland to raise a few bucks for the victims of the earthquakes and nuclear disaster in Japan.

There are still over a hundred thousand homeless and languishing, so we're doing some more rides here in NJ/NY in case any of you wish to contribute or even ride along.

New East River ferry is bike friendly

Submitted by CWood on Fri, 06/17/2011 - 6:36pm

The new city-subsidized East River Ferry is free for another week or so. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/13/live-blogging-the-new-east-river-ferry-service/?hp

I rode it with a friend from East 34th Street to Governor's Island this morning. Hopscotches through Brooklyn, change boats at Pier 11 Wall Street, then out to recreational paradise.

The commuter ferry from Brooklyn is bike friendly. Two racks up front at the entry hold 20 bikes. The fare will be $4 plus $1 for bike, free for sweet little folders like my Brompton.
