July 4 Weekend in Downeast Maine

Submitted by FHarris on Tue, 06/21/2011 - 11:05am

Any members heading to the Maine coast between Belfast and Bar Harbor over the July 4 holiday rather than West Point?

If so, and you would like to do some riding on the beautiful Blue Hill peninsula or explore  Mt. Desert Island, let me know.

Does anyone have a torque wrench they like that will provide between 450-500 inch-pounds of torque?

Thanks!

Advice please, planning a trip to the North Fork

Submitted by Sir Roger on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 10:29pm

Some time in the next couple of weeks I plan to ride the North Fork from Riverhead or Mattituck to Orient Point and back. A Friday or Saturday which day would be best ?

I am really finding the LIRR site almost impossible to use for planning a train trip so it looks like I will put Harry in the back of the car and drive to Riverhead (Takes about 1.5 hours in the early early from my home).

Questions.. where is the best spot to start the ride. Does anyone have any cool mapmyrides or google map and cue sheets. (I could not find anything in the library). I did find some interesting looking routes on the Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association page. Some cool round trips that take in the Hamptons and a ferry across to Shelter Island and back via the N. Fork.

July 4th - Prospect Park to Roosevelt Island

Submitted by aron on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 6:10pm

I am looking for a ride partner (or several) for a 10:00 start / 2:00 end at an easy pace. R/T  is about 25 miles, so figure with a lunch break, travel at about 8-10 mph.

Can start from either end of the park. Please post by June 29th if interested.

Bikes in bus lanes?

Submitted by Derek on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 5:18pm

Today, for the second time in as many weeks, I was forced off the road on First Avenue near  the UN by an M15 bus.  Both drivers, when confronted, told me that I should be in the bike lane as the bus lane is for buses only (there is no bike lane there).  What is the law regarding bikes in bus lanes?  I seem to remember that bikes used to be allowed in them but to be fair all the signs I read said buses only.  Has the law changed?

Review of the 2011 Ride To Montauk

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 5:18pm

Since no one asked...

I posted something long (and a bit harsh) about the 5BBC Montauk Century and I feel a minor sense of duty to be evenhanded and report what I saw Saturday on Glen's Ride to Montauk, where I also did the 100mi course.

The short version of it: same course, the rest stops were better but the finish line was worse. And for both of these rides, you might want to avoid their transportation and finish-line amenities altogether, even though volunteers work really hard, since both events are unreliable at providing some of their promised services for the hordes that show up.

Yoga at West Point

Submitted by galfromdownunder on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 2:00pm

This is my first West Point and I'm looking forward to it ...  no longer all over the map with Bike Friday so can actually sign up for things!

I told Lucia I'm happy to offer a free Yoga for Cyclists class AM and/or PM each day of the trip. On PACTOUR I taught twice a day,  7am - 30 mins pre-ride and 4pm - 45 mins post ride. Some of you may recall Karin Fantus and I taught a SIG-ready yoga/pilates combo class as an NYCC event this year, http://www.yogapilatesnyc.com.

Central Park Cycling Issues - Letter Sent to CRCA

Submitted by MLevin on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 1:08pm

All,

I am pasting a letter that was received by CRCA and everyone should be made aware of.  In order for us to keep shared use of CP, people cannot be going full speed on the weekend or evenings.

Please forward on to any cycling contacts.
