Fall Foliage Rides Cancelled Due To Wind Advisory

Submitted by WWright on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 6:56am

Today's fall foliage ride to Croton Dam / Peekskill is cancelled due to high winds.  The forecast has become more severe since yesterday, and the National Weather Service has issused a wind advisory.  There will be no make-up date for this ride.

As frustrating as it is to cancel after all the planning (and the beer at the end!) I feel this is the prudent thing to do.  The first concern of any NYCC ride is that it be a safe one, and today's windiness could jeopardize the safety of our riders.

Thanks for understanding, see you next week for FF #2.

biggest/longest climb reasonably accessible from NYC?

Submitted by DLoayza on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 6:45pm

While I do not aspire to suffer any more than I already do on hills, a friend asked me if there are any hills/mountains greater than Bear Mountain, that are accessible either by riding there, or taking a train (from NYC).

Thanks,

Danny

Fall foliage train ride - Buy Broccoli and get a bike brake free

Submitted by BMirell on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 12:34pm

That short strong rubber band that holds the stalks of Broccoli together at the super market fits perfectly around the brake lever and the end of the handlebar. Just squeeze the brake lever, install the rubber band and the bike wont move on train. Well, it wont move forward or back but side to side is a different story. You'll need to buy Licorice for that. :-)

Tommasini Bikes

I just got back from Grosseto, Italy, and got fitted for a Tommasini bike.  I'm not fully committed to getting one, so I wanted to hear from you - any opinions from experience, hearsay or reading?  Carbon or steel?

Thanks.

START: Grand Central Terminal

FINISH: 4:32, 5:32 PM at Westport Metro North

TERRAIN: Very hilly.  4500' climbing, mostly over the first 50 miles.

River Road Ride Thursday is off for 11/13/2011

Submitted by Cmoore on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 8:53pm

As reluctant as I am to call rides for weather forecasts, I am doing so for this week's ride. I do hope to see some people signed up to join us for this lovely way to briskly start the day before the winter gets here for real.

C Level Loops around Prospect Park - very early mornings during the week

Submitted by ydenize on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 8:48pm

Hi.

I am a new member (NOT a ride leader).  But I do try to get to Prospect Park in Brooklyn to do laps during the work week.  The catch is that I go at 5:00 AM (sometimes 5:15).  I believe I am a C level and roll about 13 - 14 mph on average.

If anyone is interesting in joining me from time to time; would love the company.

Thanks.

Yves
