Railroads Adopt Pneumatic Tires to Reduce Suspension Losses

Submitted by NWeissman on Thu, 04/04/2013 - 9:30am

Recent tests with bicycles have shown that even on a very smooth road surface, lower tire pressures increase comfort with no loss of speed. Now even railroads have become persuaded that super-hard tires diminish both comfort and performance.

B SIG Meets at Eleanor Roosevelt Statue This Week

Submitted by FLeffel on Thu, 04/04/2013 - 8:39am

Please note that the B SIG meets this Saturday at the Eleanor Roosevelt Statue, 72nd and West Avenue, NOT at the Rambles Shed.

The ride schedule linked through the B SIG web page had incorrectly listed the start at the Rambles Shed.

It will reopen in "late Spring" with a slightly different name the "Barn"?  It is just to the left of the gazebo.  IMHO, their donuts & Nyack's Gypsy Donuts (with a branch within Piermont's bike shop!) are superior to Dunkin & Krispy Kreme.

In the meantime hungry pedalers can check out the nice Korean/American bakery in that center (ample indoor seating) It is behnind the gazebo at the bottom of a "U" of shops.

Please consider signing this e-petition to show Parks Dept. our support for completing the Putnam (rail) trail through Van Cortland Park. I could not improve on the wording below from Steve F., a 5BBC bike leader who circulated this to that club's leader forum - - so hats off to Steve F for starting this through the cycling community.  Please reach out to friends with this to get signatures, and post to other cyclist groups you are in.

Signing the petition is very easy and rapid. Go to http://www.change.org/petitions/connect-the-putnam-trail-in-van-cortlandt-park-bronx#

Please Help Out For the Race2Rebuild!

Submitted by SReynolds on Tue, 04/02/2013 - 5:43pm

Dear Friends,

For those of you that know me, my weekend reads like a Mad-Libs including biking, running, swimming (okay maybe not so much swimming) and racing; just fill in the times and distances. So for me, I’ve already committed to training and racing this season. However, when a friend of mine told me about quitting her full time job to dedicate all of her time a program called Race2Rebuild, directly supporting families whose homes were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy, I added another race to my list. My commitment to my fitness has transformed my life. This time, it will help rebuild one home destroyed by Hurricane Sandy- transforming the life of one family that was forever changed last October.

April 13th- Change someone's life!!

Submitted by thaney on Tue, 04/02/2013 - 11:03am

Do you love cycling?  Do you want to do something meaningful with your hobby/obsession/love for bicycling?

Come out for one hour on Saturday, April 13th and learn how to teach others to ride.  Once you have these skills you can teach at one of Bike New York's free classes and you'll be a pro at teaching the kids on your block, or in your family.

To get involved in teaching others how to ride a bicycle, email Francesca at [email protected]
