citibike using obsolete technology?

Submitted by GYang on Tue, 06/11/2013 - 4:33pm

here is an interesting bike share technology that dispenses with fixed docking stations, instead putting the tracking/locking/locating infrastructure onto the bike itself:

Jamis bike socks at tonight's meeting, as dinner purchase incentives

Submitted by EWeiss on Tue, 06/11/2013 - 11:38am

News Flash: Due to Jamis Bicycles generosity, we are presenting 36 pairs of their beautiful yellow and blue bike socks, to the first 36 purchasers of buffet dinners ($20.00) at tonight's NYCC C-SIG graduation meeting at Annie Moore's Restaurant & Pub, 50 E. 43rd St, (bet. Mad. & Vand. Aves.). So arrive early and make your feet happy. The festivities start at 6:00 PM, with our informal cocktail time. Additionally, 20 pairs of Jamis bike shorts will be raffled off, along with the top raffle prize of a 2012 Jamis Xenith Endura Comp.

Thursday, June 20th, it’s the 17th annual ever so popular “Longest day of the year double half century A20 ride”.  Last year we limited the number of participants to “unlimited”. . .  . and it sold out!  Better sign up quick.

Ride starts at 5:00 AM from Grant’s Tomb.  5:00  AM!  That is very, very sick.  Over the bridge, north on River Road, 15 minute stop to open the Runcible.  There’s a sign on the GW bridge that says the path doesn’t open till 6:00 AM.  In the 17 years we’ve been doing this ride, the path has always been open.  I know one day it won’t be.  Let’s hope that day is not Thursday, 6/20.

A while back, I posted asking for advice on whether to follow the signed NYS Bike Route 25 to ride eastward on the North Fork, or to stay further north and use the more direct Sound Avenue/route 48 to avoid heavier traffic on the south side of the fork.

So, I did the ride on Saturday -- beautiful day for a ride, and a great tailwind the whole way -- and wanted to report back.

What we ended up doing was sticking with Sound Avenue as far as Mattituck, and then switching back to 25 at Mattituck. Full track for this segment of the ride at http://app.strava.com/activities/59123729

Tuesday 5:45am B16 laps in CP canceled

Submitted by LWintner on Mon, 06/10/2013 - 9:10pm

The weather reports are not good and I think that even if it's not raining at 5:45am, the ground will be soaked.  So, I'm canceling.  Hope to see you Thursday.

East Coast Greenway from Newark to Jersey City

Submitted by FHarris on Mon, 06/10/2013 - 1:06pm

Took this yesterday and it is pretty overgrown and debris-challenged.  There are signs, but it is easy to miss one.  It's pretty marginal and not particularly kind to you or your bike. I tried Belleville Turnpike (Rte. 7) a few years ago, and it was much better than this was.  Any other Newark--Jersey City routes out there that people like?

Update on Putnam Trail Vote

Submitted by Slugger on Mon, 06/10/2013 - 12:35pm

Apparently, a vote will happen on the Putnam Trail tomorrow, Tuesday June 11. A running club is trying to get people "out in force" to save this "nature trail" (which, remember, is a railroad right of way and has railroad ties left in place, and they are not advocating leaving it in or returning it to any sort of natural state). If you aren't already planning to go to the NYCC meeting, please plan to attend to lend support for a MULTI-USE plan, rather than letting one group have its own private playground.
