24 Radial-laced spokes & NYC conditions

Submitted by isaacb on Sat, 08/13/2022 - 9:06am

I'm considering a new bike and notice that a lot of road bikes (with caliper brakes*, like this one) come with radial-laced spokes, sometimes with as few as 24. What is the reputation and experience of these kinds of wheels in our local, relatively rough conditions? Thanks.
* Disc brakes do not go well with radial spoking, so these seem to come with crossed spokes.

Gravel bike in NY

Submitted by slaunaire on Fri, 08/12/2022 - 8:20am

hello,

I am coming from south of France. I will spend 10 days in NYY with my wife begining of october, but I will have 5 days "off" (from monday the 3 of october to friday the 7) and i wish to ride these 5 days.

I have 2 questions :

- what are the 5 bests ride (gravel or road) to do during my trip ? I wish to ride every day, about 5 to 7 hours a day (I will live in an hotel in Brooklyn),

- where can I rent a gravel bike ?

thanks for your help.
Regards,

Sebastien.

Now I am told the trail is even better above Carmel!  Any info or opinions?

Would appreciate any positive info--also car access info  from Cuomo or Bear Mtn bridges

All-Class Ride(s)

Submitted by GKaplan on Wed, 08/10/2022 - 3:59pm

Once upon a time, almost long ago, NYCC held three (3) All class Rides each year : to Bethpage, toTarrytonw, and to Harriman State Park, and there were no othe rrides scheduled for those days.  Now, I understand that \there are other rides posted for Sunday Auig 14.  Why?  The puprose of the All-Class Rides is that the whole club - A, B, C  and whathave you, ride to a common point and picnic together, and afterwards all ride back to CentralPark as a group.  Too bad the tradition i not m( maintained'

(I wll be there by Uber.)

Thank you to Denise for organizing this evening's ice cream social

On behalf of all the sugar-high cyclists, I want to thank Denise for organizing this evening's ice cream social. It doesn't get any better than sunset and gelato with cycling friends. I saw happy faces, sticky spoons, and good conversations all around. I also want to give a shout-out to Jerry Ross, who chose to spend his 25th birthday at the social. May you have many more.

It made the local NYC news.

The little bike path on Greenbush south of Bradley is one piece of bike infrastructure I was always happy to use in Rockland county. 303 in both directions was closed for 10 hours as first responders collected evidence after the crash. The surveillance video from across the street showed the cause of the first crash. I got a view of the debris field from the crest of bikepath above the crash side as the last Ambulance raced off.

Important and Very Welcome Addition To Our NYCC Library
