New SRAM 9 Speed Chain - Remove the Factory Lube or Not?
Found this on-line:
SRAM chains use Gleitmo, a high quality industrial chain lube (not just a surface protectant), that is applied by hot dipping in a vat of it at the factory so it penetrates into all the internals of the chain where it is most needed. Its not really suited for home use, first because its only available in large commercial quantities, second the method of application as above, and third its very expensive! SRAM themselves recommend you run with the original lubricant for as long as possible before adding your own.
However the lube that SRAM uses is thick, sticky and wax-like. I can't believe it will not be a dirt magnet. My sense is to clean the surface, just the surface, and re-lube with a good qualtity chain lube.
Thoughts?
Ride the 5 Boro Bike Tour for Charity
Registration for the 5 Boro opens January 14th, and before you pay for a slot I would like to invite everyone to consider riding for a charity. As a charity rider, you are guaranteed a start in the first wave toward the front (right behind the VIP riders). A continental breakfast at the start and box lunch on Staten Island are also provided. I've done it for the past 5 years and have enjoyed the ride each time - no disasters, no bottlenecks, yes you still have to wait for the ferry.
All charities are required to apply for a slot and are vetted by the ride organizers, so you can take your pick and rest assured that you are riding for a legitimate organization. If you can't decide, come ride with me for Bronxworks
A Request About A Request for “feedfront" on The Presidents Speak.
i had sent an email last week...
it might be a good idea if a reply was sent to those who may have (like me) sent in a suggestion or two... something along the lines of, "thanks for the suggestions, hope to see you at the meeting"...
whether my suggestions are used or not, it would be nice to know that they were received...

Motor Parkway Greenway Expansion Idea
Hi NYCC,
I just launched the website www.motorparkwayeast.com The idea is to extend the Long Island (Vanderbilt) Motor Parkway eastwards through State and City owned lands.
This would not involve the use of even one inch of private property.

Bike purchase advice for a tall rider
Hi guys, I'm hoping for some advice for a '1%er'... 1% tallest that is! At 6'6" I've found it hard to get a road bike with a good fit without attaching weird clunky stem extenders or other contraptions to my bike. Can anyone recommend a frame/manufacturer that makes 64cm or bigger frames? Are there any riders at the club of a similar stature that can make personal endorsements or even dire warnings? What materials are best at this size? Is it better to keep it real with steel when you're riding with the Clydesdales? Does anyone have any experience of getting a frame built to measure? Any advice gratefully received! If it makes a difference My price point is going to be around $1500-1750

January 7th 30 mile ride 5 degrees Fahrenheit
Took a pre-dawn 30 mile ride this morning to check out my gear in the cold weather. Roads were clear and everything worked great - bike, apparel, conditioning. My clothing kept me nice and warm and the special triflow lubrication on the bike kept the wheels, chain, derailleurs, and gears moving. Temperature was 5 degrees Fahrenheit with a constant 20 mph wind making the real feel temperature -15 degrees F.
One additional learning from this mornings ride is that I cannot turn the pedals as quickly in temperatures below 15 degrees Fahrenheit so I need to budget a little more time for the ride as it took me 15 minutes longer than usual.
Randonneuring Information Meeting
A message from the head of the Long Island Randonneurs - this is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning about the fantastic world of brevets and other long distance rides.
(just as a note: when I started the C SIG two years ago, 30 miles in one day was a serious effort requiring at least a day of recovery. By that October, I rode my first century. The next spring, I rode my first 200K. You don't have to be fast, you don't have to be strong, you just keep going. It is a fantastic group of people, a wonderful way to see the world around us, and I can't recommend it highly enough.)
