A question from a Newcomer.

Submitted by GaboBici on Sat, 06/02/2018 - 7:17pm

Hello everyone. I just joined NYCC and to tell you the truth I am new in the bicycle world. I know how to ride a bike since I was a young kid (now I am 35), but I never went deep into this topic.

I live in NYC since June 2016 (I am from Chile, South America) and last year I moved very close to my work (2 miles distance) so I decided to stop using the dirty Subway trains and I went to a Bicycle store for the first time in years. They recommended the Trek FX 1. I bought it not knowing anything about bikes, but for the commute, it was a great bike actually.

I started enjoying riding that FX 1 more than I expected, and after 10 months, I decided to sell the FX 1 and I upgraded to my new FX 3 Disc, which is way better, faster and lighter than the FX 1.

Actual Central Park dialogue with a bike cop.

Scene: Central Park, West Drive, 6/1/18; 1:12PM. Two cops riding bikes side by side. Neither is wearing a helmet.

Q: I don't mean to be a smart aleck, but doesn't the department require you to wear a helmet?

A: Same as you. It's optional.

_____

Commentary: I tend to think the NYPD and the City's insurance policies state otherwise.

Two cyclists collided on Memorial Day around midday on the Queensboro Bridge. One was wearing a yellow vest and white helmet. He had a white bike. He was taken away by the fire department EMS.

If you have any information regarding this, or witnessed it, I would be grateful if you reached out to me.

Last year there was construction and detours on two major parts  of this route. This year the projects have all been completed and major sections have been repaved. Rode it on Friday.
