Hotfoot and numb toes

Submitted by EJacobs on Thu, 07/05/2018 - 9:48am

Dear Message Boarders,

I got hotfoot right over the (SPD) cleat plate in both feet on the final stretch of the NJ 600k last weekend. I've never gotten it remotely this bad, but it was a long, hot, and climby route. Fast forward to today, and toes 3 and 4 are still numb and swollen.

The shoes have plenty of room in the toe box and I unclip and wiggle regularly. I tried moving the cleats back, which bought me ~20 pain-free minutes. The soles are not particularly stiff.

What to do? Stiffer soles? More flexible soles? Those funky-looking cycling sandals? Go back to toe clips? Custom insoles? Metatarsal thingies? Consult foot expert-- if so, which?

Useful advice gratefully accepted,

-Erica

Useful new app

Submitted by CWaaser on Wed, 07/04/2018 - 8:56am

There's a new app called PicNick that will show the location of picnic tables, and may include useful info such as whether there's shade or restrooms & water at the location. This is a user-updated app and will only be as good or useful as the info that's added by users. Many of us do rides where finding a shaded picnic table is a wonderful thing. If we all get this app and start adding to it and verifying tables that have been added by others, it will become a real boon. (It's free.) Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, you have to be at the table location to add it to the app, so you can't just sit at home and add tables you know about.

Taxi hits Citi Bike rider

Submitted by CKulo on Tue, 07/03/2018 - 6:14pm

I was shaken when I saw a Citi bike commuter down on 5th Avenue today around 3pm, with an ambulance on the way. Looks like he was hit by a taxi. I pray he is ok. If anyone has information on his condition, please post.

Viewing the Tour De France

Submitted by SAndrews on Sun, 07/01/2018 - 1:20pm

I am not able to tape the Tour (for a number of reasons) and cannot watch it in the mornings.  I am wondering if there is a way to see it in the evenings or use my Ipad to stream it at some time during the day.  Thanks for any information.

Temperature-Wise, How High Will You Go?

At what point on a humid day do you say it is just too hot to ride?  (So far, for me, never, as I head out before sunrise .  But tomorrow should present an interesting test case.)
