Rode the Trailways from VC Park to Millwood today: sections are in terrible shape

Submitted by HSchiffman on Fri, 07/20/2018 - 10:58pm

Potenially the Trailways is a great resource.

The new Elmsford section is lovely. Pavement in some sections are holding up well. The Mile Square/Tuckahoe Rd section one.

But other sections are deteriorating rapidly. Sections are rippling and tearing. One cannot use these parts on a bike at any reasonable speed. Some sections are just plain unsafe. That is too bad as it is so direct a route going north/south.

A reminder of timing for reserving trains on Metro North

Metro North protocol dictates that we cannot reserve train passage past Tuesday afternoon prior to the current weekend.

Who might carry Mavic Aksium bladed spokes in Manhattan?

Submitted by RSchoenbohm on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 2:53pm

Broke a spoke this morning and neither Sid's or Bicycle Habitat have any in stock. Those two are my go-to shops so I am now clueless. 298mm straight pull ('rear right'), bladed, and hopefully silver. Thanks in advance!

Bike lock?

I need to buy a new bike lock. Any recommendations?  Not sure what size? 4ft? 6ft?

thanks

You're not still riding slow, skinny tires, are you?

Submitted by RKaufman on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 11:15am

Still riding 23 or 25 mm tires? I switched to 42 mm Grand Bois Extra Leger on my main bike - a Boulder All Road 650B - a few years ago. Faster, smoother and decidedly more comfortable! Particularly on the roads typically found within 100 miles of here. Think about going wider if you haven't already:

Chrusty Guzzetta injured in bike crash

Submitted by GRoss on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 7:07am

Christy Guzzetta suffered a fall and was injured in a crash in Central Park. My understanding is that a pothole was responsible. He won't be able to ride for much of this summer. The good news is he apparently won't require surgery.

Get Well Soon Christy!

Garmin has another GPS/computer option for people like us: the Edge 130

In short: light, relatively cheap, a little stripped down in functionality, but looks good for following the kind of rides we have in our ride library. Supposedly 15 hour battery life, a thing that matters a little more than you'd think (if the battery life is 8-10 hours and it comes up a little short on that, you'll find it drained before the end of some of our longer rides)

Not meant to be commercial, just helpful - nobody NEEDS one of these, but it is probably one of the more useful additions one can buy for doing frequent long rides.

ENY jersey sizing question

Submitted by Myles Lewis on Mon, 07/16/2018 - 9:51pm

I wear a L or XL in Primal (I don’t like a tight jersey). Does anyone know what would be the corresponding size with the 2018 ENY jersey?
