Caution - carpet tacks in the bike lane in Central Park today

Submitted by LWintner on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 9:29am

Two people in the B16 morning laps group got flats today.  At least one was caused by a carpet tack embedded in his tire (not sure about the other).  Someone else from another morning laps group had the same problem with a carpet tack.

The flats became noticeable on the East Side but we're not sure where the carpet tacks were picked up by the tires.

I've reported it to 311 (Parks Deparment).

Very annoying....

best way to get from metro north 125th to the west side

Submitted by mgeller1 on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 7:43am

usually i go straight down 125th and turn to riverside near fairway but this usually invites  a fair amount of traffic. yesterday i experimented , rode south turning west twice on 119th and then later on 110th after heading south on morningside avenue. is there a better way?

Is there any way to know the spraying schedule on Henry Hudson Drive?

Submitted by RSchoenbohm on Wed, 08/15/2018 - 11:50am

This morning, starting at Ross Dock, a crew was out spraying on Henry Hudson Drive (aka River Road). They had a lovely orange sign saying, among other things, no bicycling. There was no notification at the park entrance that the road would be closed ahead. Some cyclists were turning back and I suppose some rode through, though none while I was there. Is there anywhere that notification of sparying is posted or can be gotten? Putting aside arguments regarding safety and a real need to ban cyclist (and runners, and walkers), arguments that I am not qualified to vet, once that sign goes up anyone continuing on is liable to ticketing.

Has anyone cycled up near West Point recently? Are Mine Rd and Storm King Hwy open to cyclists at this point?

Thanks.

Cycling suggestions in Lake George area

Submitted by natan on Tue, 08/14/2018 - 12:34pm

Hello collective wisdom! I'm heading up to Lake George and was curious if anyone has cycling routes recommendations for the area. Looking for 50 to 80ish miles routes. I am camping 20mi north of Bolton's landing/6mi south of Ticonderoga and have access to car should good starting locations require a reasonable drive.

Thanks!

ISO LBC with Excellent Shoe Fitting Staff - Sidi

Submitted by edelk on Sun, 08/12/2018 - 11:11pm

Any suggestions on a Manhattan or Brooklyn LBS with excellent shoe fitting staff? I’d like to upgrade from my 6 year old Sidis to the Sidi Shot. I’m focused on getting a really good fit with no hot spots, especially in warm weather and over multi-hour rides. I’d be especially grateful for a referral to a shop that permits exchanges or refunds.

Thanks for any leads!

NYCC Labor day weekend in Poughkeepsie

Submitted by MBaker on Sun, 08/12/2018 - 5:53pm

Hope you can join us in Poughkeepsie for Labor day weekend. I've rented a great house from Saturday til Monday. House is less then a mile from the Hopewell Junction rail trail and the walkway over the Hudson.

Tentative plan for the weekend: Day 1: 2 bridges ride (~44 miles, 2700 ft). Lunch at Tito Sanatana Taqueria. Afternoon swim (pool in house)

Day 2: Bike to Rhinebeck, lunch at Bread alone (mainly flat ride, ~30 miles). Afternoon swim or trip to mansion or ARTOMI. Dinner at Local111 in Philmont.

Day 3: Swim, then bike the rail trail.

There are plenty of things to do in the area, and the roads are so bike friendly!

All rides will be posted on the listings. B 15-17 pace, we'll accomodate other speeds too!

PIP Alpine Ranger Station Hours

Submitted by mhsimkin on Sun, 08/12/2018 - 12:55pm

Does anyone know the hours for the ranger station?  I'm thinking about trying to do Henry Hudson Drive/River Road one morning before heading to work.  I just would either need to refill my water bottles at the ranger station or make sure I carry extra.

Thanks

Well, discretion is the better part of valor. The forecast is just too daunting, so we’re canceling. Look for a reschedule later in the month.
